21 March The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid pass laws.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination WHEN DO WE CELEBRATE IT? 21 ST March - Every year. WHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT? We should remember the awful events that took place in South Africa on the 21 st March 1960. We should celebrate and learn from our differences. We should value ourselves and each other.

By having assemblies and or lessons where we learn about the tragic events of 21 st March 1960 in Sharpeville, South Africa. By talking about the injustices of segregation such as ‘Apartheid’. By celebrating all races and cultures.
