Stephanie Mohorne and Shannon Harrelson June Administrative Leadership Retreat 2014 Best Practice Data Walls

What data best drives a data wall? How do you ensure use of the data wall? What is the process for keeping it up to date? What is the teacher responsibility vs administrator responsibility? Four questions for this session

Dorn model How Lincoln began the implementation of a data wall. Chosen as the UNI Jacobson Center model school during our first year of restructuring. One of the components of the restructuring was the implementation of the workshop model in the classroom and the use of data walls by staff. Our Literacy Coach was training in Arkansas by Linda Dorn on the CLM (Comprehensive Literacy Model) which also included using a data wall effectively.

What data best drives a data wall? The data used for the data wall cards differs by grade level and time of year. For example, in kindergarten the beginning of the year data that is put on the card for reading is letter identification. As the students test in the winter, the DRA2 score is put on the reading card. Data that will help drive instruction

How do you ensure the use of the data wall? Has to be made an expectation by administration. Explain its necessity Accountability Provides a tangible view of student achievement/performance Shows educational history of students

What is the process for keeping it up to date? Data wall is always updated during one of our PLC team times. Math is updated during a Math PLC on a Monday and Reading/Writing is updated during a Thursday PLC. Data is collaboratively scored and discussed during PLC times. Once the data wall is established, keeping it updated becomes less of a “process” and more of the basis for discussing student needs.

What is the teacher responsibility vs. administrator responsibility? Teacher Responsibility Bring the appropriate agreed upon data needed to update the wall. This will differ by grade level. Be prepared to have a conversation with team which included administrators during the time the data is added to the cards Administrator Responsibility Being part of the communication about data Coaching teachers through data interpretation Coaching teachers on best practice
