METHODOLOGY COLLECTION OF PRIMARY AND SECONDARY DATA COLLECTION OF WATER AND WASTE WATER SAMPLE TESTING OF SAMPLES

PREPARATION OF CITY SANITATION PLAN FOR SMP COLONY RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS

Methodology Primary Data: We had three meetings with the people in SMP colony. We also collected details about the families residing in SMP colony. Secondary data: We collected the water sample from SMP colony and are about to test the water quality. This test is done to assess the quality of water and whether the quality of water contributes to the deterioration of pipes.

City Sanitation Plan City Sanitation (Master) Plans (CSP), sometimes also referred to as Municipal Sanitation Plans or Water and Sanitation Strategy Plans, are strategic planning processes for citywide sanitationsector development. To manage water resources, water safety plans (WSP) exist.SanitationCSPSanitation Strategysanitationwater safety plansWSP

PLANNING PROCESS STAGE 1 Prepare to plan STAGE 2 Understand current problems STAGE 3 Develop solutions

STAGE 4 Plan citywide STAGE 5 Implement plan

PREPARE TO PLAN SMP Colony is situated in the banks of river Vaigai. It is housing board apartment built by Slum Clearance Board of Tamil Nadu about four years ago. The people in that area suffered from many societal problems out of which we, students of Thiagarajar college of Engineering focussed on two major problems.

Micro level study

PROBLEM ANALYSIS The two problems that we focused in SMP colony is : i.Leakage of water pipes ii.Drainage overflow

LEAKAGE OF WATER PIPES: Reasons to this problem: i)Low quality of pipes. ii)Bad workmanship. iii)Salt formation in pipes. iv)No proper maintainance of pipes.

Solutions to leakage of pipes: Estimation of cost for elbows: There are 12 flats in SMP colony. Each flat has 16 house. Each house has 3 elbows. Hence, 16 x 3=48 elbows out of which 25 needs to be repaired. Cost of one elbow: 20 rupees Total cost for one flat= 25 x 20=500 rupees Labor cost for 1 day=500 rupees Total cost =1000 rupees(approx)

Drainage overflow problem:

Drainage problem: Volume of waste water generated: Considering 12 flats, Municipal water supply=12 x 16 x 10 x 20 x 15 =576000litre per month Bore water supply =500 x 12 x 16 x4 =384000 litre per month

Total water supply= 960000 litre per month Only 80 percent is to be considered as waste water, Hence volume of waste water = 0.8 x 960000 = 768000 litre per month For each flat, it is 64000 litre per month Size of the tank to be designed=3 x 3 x7.1 m Only sludge deposition in this tank and the waste water is to be let inside the river.

DEWATS Dewats (Decentralized waste water treatment system). A small cluster of 32 houses is connected to a community septic tank. The system treats toilet and bathroom effluent from each household. Waste water is channeled to the septic tank by small diameter sewer lines.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION AND MANAGEMENT The Dewats was designed in consultation with the community. Discussions were held with the community on site selections and construction aspects. Community was involved in area clean up,child safety, safe guarding construction materials etc.

Advantages of dewats Provides treatment for domestic and industrial waste water. Low initial investment cost. Reliable and long lasting construction design Low maintainance cost.

This system is usually applied where soil conditions allow direct infiltration without disturbing the ground water quality.

WASTE WATER SAMPLE: Chemical Oxygen Demand: COD is the oxygen demand required by the organic substances in water to oxidise them by a strong chemical oxidant. COD=(b-a) x N of ferrous ammino sulphate x 1000 x 8/ml of sample taken =40 mg/L

Dissolved Oxygen: DO is very important factor of water body ability to support aquatic life. DO= 0.2 mg of oxygen x ml of titrant/200ml sample =0.2x 5.5x 100/200 = 0.55 mg/l

Social Capital Credit SoCC’s is a social venture for incentivizing development at the bottom of the pyramid,. In other words, SoCC’s allows people in rural areas to earn credit points(SoCC’s points).

Discussion with community members We discussed with community members about Social Capital Credit. We discussed three points : i)Disposal of waste in bins. ii)Separation of degradable and non-degradable waste. iii)Active participation by the associates.

Thank you
