2 A Mineral Is… …a solid object that is formed in nature and has never been alive. Some minerals are found in some of the foods that you eat. Some people wear minerals.

3 Different Kinds No two minerals are exactly alike.
Minerals come in many shapes, sizes, and lusters.

4 Luster Luster means how shiny or dull a mineral is.
Some words to describe luster are: Dull Silky Pearly Waxy Brilliant Metallic Shiny

5 Let’s Look at Some Minerals Describe what you see.
Amethyst Mica Garnet Quartz

6 Other Ways to Identify Minerals
Color Some minerals have more than one color. Example: Quartz can be pink, purple, white, clear, or black.

7 Minerals Everyday Do you put salt on your food? Salt is a mineral!
Do you have windows in your house? Quartz is in the glass! The building you are in was built with iron which is from the mineral hematite.

8 Pretty Minerals Sapphire Diamond Topaz

9 Useful Minerals Graphite- Used in pencils Mica- ground up in paint
Talc- Uses include baby powder, soapstone, and in gymnastics to grip the bars.
