KMA Space Weather Service Presented to CGMS-44 on Working Group SWTT

2 KMA Space Weather Service KMA has the mandate to provide the space weather information to the public. (September 2011) KMA has the mandate to provide the space weather information to the public. (September 2011) The Revision of the Korean Weather Act Space Weather Service to the public International Cooperation Data Exchange - WMO Information System(WIS) Personnel Exchan ge Space Weather instrument development - cooperation with ESA, UC Berkely The establishment of the observation system Build the Space-/Ground- Based Observation system - Geomagnetic data in Cheongyang (INTERMagnet Site) - Space weather data of KSEM Model Development Development of space weather prediction model 1) Solar and interplanetary region 2) Near Earth region Development of cosmic radiation dose model(KREAM) 2012 – Present - Development of cosmic radiation dose model for aviation - Development of KSEM for Space weather mission * KREAM(Korean Radiation Exposure Assessment Model for aviation route dose) ** KSEM(Korea Space wEather Monitor; payload of the KMA’s following meteorological satellite, GK-2A)

3 Status of GEO-KOMPSAT-2A space weather mission Geo-KOMPSAT-2A Satellite - To be launched in 2018 - Geostationary Orbit at 128.2E SensorRequirementsApplication Field Particle Detector - Electron energy range : 100keV ~ 2 MeV - Proton energy range : 100keV ~ 20 MeV - Angular Resolution (pitch angle): 60° at least Global Electron Distribution Particles distribution on geostationary Magnetometer - Measurement range : ± 64,000nT (in 3 axes) - Field resolution : 1nT at least (on orbit) Prediction for Dst and Kp Index Satellite Charging Monitor - Current range: ± 3pA/cm 2 - Measurement resolution : 0.001pA/cm 2 Satellite Charging Index Products (Level 2) requiring space monitoring Particle flux around Magnetosphere Particle flux for the targeted satellite orbit Satellite Charging Index Magnetospheric Disturbing index (Dst, Kp) Prediction on Magnetospheric Disturbing index (Dst, Kp)

KMA Space Weather Prediction Model (1/2) 4 KREAM -A cosmic radiation dose model KREAM(Korean Radiation Exposure Assessment Model for aviation route dose), is based on the GEANT4 particle transport model and real-time atmospheric model of NRLMSIS00 -Considering not only GCR(Galactic Cosmic Ray) but also SEP(Solar Energetic Proton) -KREAM can give three dimensional distribution of radiation dose with 1°×1°, 100m altitude intervals -Aviation Meteorological Office(AMO) of KMA will provide the information to the airline companies

KMA Space Weather Prediction Model (2/2) 5 Solar flare model produces the probability of occurrence of the flare -using McIntosh’s sunspot group classification and, -change in the area of sunspot group, which is SRS(Solar Region Summary) from NOAA Solar Flare Solar proton model uses flare generating regions -producing the probabilities of proton to affect Earth and, -producing the time of the maximum flux to affect Earth Solar Proton

 Development and research of prediction model  Improvement of cosmic radiation dose model for aviation  Development of solar proton prediction model  Analysis and application of prediction model using KSEM data  The study of space weather effects on weather and climate (air quality, meteorological elements, etc)  Space weather service  Application of space weather data, especially KSEM data  Public service of prediction model data  Sharing of space weather products of KMA using WMO’s space weather portal and DCPC  Contribution of training  Training experts for utilizing of KSEM data  Training space weather monitoring, analysis and model operators  International/Domestic cooperation  Technical improvement through various cooperations (NOAA, NASA, ESA, and academies and Institutes)  Participating in international conference or data/information exchanges (e.g. activities as a member of IPT-SWISS : WMO expert members) KMA Space Weather Policy and Future Plan 6
