TYPES OF RADIATION How many types of radiation are there and how are they different? SHARE Talk to the person next to you, you have 1 minute

ALPHA Alpha (  ) – an atom decays into a new atom and emits an alpha particle (2 protons and 2 neutrons) Alpha radiation is the nucleus of a helium atom travelling at extremely high speed. Unstable nucleus New nucleus Alpha particle

Beta (  ) – an atom decays into a new atom by changing a neutron into a proton and electron. The fast moving, high energy electron is called a beta particle. Unstable nucleus New nucleus Beta particle BETA

GAMMA Gamma – after  or  decay surplus energy is sometimes emitted. The atom itself is not changed. Gamma radiation is part of the EM Spectrum; a wave with a very high frequency, very short wavelength. Unstable nucleus New nucleus Gamma radiation

Charge Which types of radiation have a charge? Share your thoughts with another group of two, you have 30 seconds

You were right if you thought…. Alpha particle Beta particle

Vapour trail Vapour tails can be formed when charged particles pass through a super cooled and saturated environment. They cause vaporised droplets to polarise and condense. Instead of water (like in this picture) we are going to use alcohol and dry ice

Experiment Warning Dry ice will burn (-78 o C) DO NOT HANDLE the dry ice

Instructions Inside the chamber are various items, note in your book what they are. Watch closely near the items and see if you can see any vapour trails Record your observations using the keywords if they help KEYWORDS: Straight path, curved path, fast, slow, long short, horizontal, vertical, bright, dim

What kind of particles did you see? Alpha (+2) particle Beta (-1) particle Muon (-1) particle Muons are caused by cosmic rays and are essentially heavy electrons with a short life span Produce a labelled diagram using your observations and the information on this slide

What else can be done with dry ice? DEMONSTRATION
