1 Enzyme Round Up Gr C: Recap the key enzyme points covered so far.
Gr B: Analyse how pH alters enzyme activity. Gr A: Link enzymes to real life scenarios. Starter Exam Play 1) State what has happened to the green enzymes. (1 mark) 2) Describe how this has happened (2marks) 3) Explain how this affects the enzyme. (2 marks) Success Criteria Question 1- The enzyme has “denatured” Question 2- Denaturing is caused by high levels of heat. The heat causes the atoms within the enzyme to vibrate, this alters the shape of the enzyme. Question 3- The enzyme will no longer function as the active site has changed. Key Words Enzyme Substrate Products Temperature pH Denature Variable Dependent Independent Activation energy Chemical reaction Catalyst

2 20mins Learning Activity
Complete the “Enzyme Grade A” Activity sheet. Attempt all of the questions and identify any you are unsure of. Ask your buddy, your brain, your books and then the boss for help if you need any. Extension Activity Using page 36 and 37 of your text books, attempt the exam questions 2, 4, and 5.

4 Plotting data 10mins Learning Activity
On a single graph, plot the pH and enzyme activity data. Key things to consider: Graph title Axis (title, size, spread) Crosses for data plotting Line of best fit Multiple colours for multiple sets of data. Enzyme activity (%) pH Amylase Pepsin Arginase 1 50 2 100 3 4 20 5 35 6 65 7 40 8 60 9 80 10 11 12 Dependent variable Independent variable

5 pH and Enzymes Self Assessment
Enzymes all have their own optimum pH. If they are placed in and environment either side of their preferred pH the enzyme activity begins to drop. This is because the enzyme changes shape, altering the active site. Unlike temperature, putting an enzyme in the wrong pH will not denature it. Once the enzyme is placed back into its optimum pH it will continue to function.

6 Similarities Differences
Learning Activity Compare differences and similarities between the effects of temperature and pH on enzymes. Similarities Differences Both temperature and pH alter the shape of enzymes. All enzymes have optimums for pH and temperature. Temperature can denature enzymes, whereas pH cannot. Temperature is a gradual guild up to the optimum, whereas, pH is more sudden.
