New Approaches/New ideas ? H.Weerts HEP Division, Argonne

H. Weerts ANL-Chicago_FNAL mtg; Feb. 2, 2008 2 This is intended to be positive Will step on some toes---- not intentional Want to see Argonne-Chicago-Fermilab be more one and collaborate Potential and core capabilities are there Are we exploiting them all ??? Can just continue as we have ……. Or create something unique & enabling Bottom line: Improvement for all of us

H. Weerts ANL-Chicago_FNAL mtg; Feb. 2, 2008 3 Collaboration I Truly form collaboration----- goal (“experiment” is more important then parts) People can freely work and function at either place Information flow is both ways Observation (for discussion……. am I biased ? ) More Argonne people “function” at/contribute to Fermilab CDF, NOvA, MINOS, E906 DY,…..( all HEP experiments) Project- X low beta linac Fermilab THE HEP lab ( single purpose)?? Should be more Fermi  Argonne ? Lower Threshold for Fermilab people/activities ? Fermilab people work outside Fermilab ? Detector/Sensor development Accelerator projects ( APS upgrade), ATLAS (not LHC) upgrade ( SRF), sensor development for non-HEP areas Examples

H. Weerts ANL-Chicago_FNAL mtg; Feb. 2, 2008 4 Collaboration II Should we establish some entity that guides collaboration, may be indentifies new areas of collaboration and establishes ways to enhance collaboration….. Not proposing another committee………. maybe am Argonne Accelerator Institute(AAI) does now for accelerators from Argonne side “Detectors, Sensors and Devices” should be another strong area of collaboration driven by expertise and need in all three institutions. Went through exercise inside Argonne Joint appointment with UoC ? OR Let it be driven by “chance” interactions and individuals knowing each other or knowing capabilities……. Outcome not obvious yet

H. Weerts ANL-Chicago_FNAL mtg; Feb. 2, 2008 5 Detectors Advanced detector “center” drawing on strength of all institutions ANL: MSD, CNM, BIO develop devices APS, HEP, PHY, NE +++ develop detectors FNAL: electronics, mechanics, clean rooms Chicago: H.Frisch, HEP, medical connection, needs of astro Enable joint positions--- deal with many problems Examples from white paper: HEP — NP — X-ray/photon science – medical — biology—homeland security Strengths: TES for CMB calorimetry 3D pixels, calorimetry ~1 psec timing idea Form a “center”: people need to flow between institutions; no/minimal institution boundaries Everybody should benefit Already MOU ANL-FNAL on ASIC/pixel development

H. Weerts ANL-Chicago_FNAL mtg; Feb. 2, 2008 6 Calorimeters in HEP (example) Currently no solution for next generation of calorimeters in HEP experiments. At a lepton collider Many ideas, none realized and not easy Solving this: requires labs with universities. What are we (all) doing: Involvement and expertise in ZEUS, CDF, DZERO, CMS & ATLAS Pursuing both options for future: PFA based and non-PFA Make stronger !! Become a center of activity ( sorry to be HEP centric here) Digital gas Total absorption; dual readout

H. Weerts ANL-Chicago_FNAL mtg; Feb. 2, 2008 7 Accelerators Now somewhat of a one way street Major upgrade of APS ATLAS upgrade and/or FRIB High power FEL ( Navy& industry) AFLC (Argonne Flex Lin Coll.) AWA: 200MV/m dielectric Can this be more of a two way street: ANL   FNAL ? Break down boundaries ?? A lot of collaboration between Argonne and Fermilab ( have quite a few of them !) Activities: SRF- processing of cavities at Argonne for “ILC”/project-X Design of low-beta linac for Project-X ++++ New SRF cavity treatment/design with layers (ALD) for ILC Material science/surface understanding of SC cavities Argonne  Fermilab ( not completely) Benefits for Argonne & use expertise ( pushing limits here) FNAL involvement feasible ?? Examples: Does Argonne want it ? (learned to appreciate after coming to ANL)

H. Weerts ANL-Chicago_FNAL mtg; Feb. 2, 2008 Argonne Flexible Two Beam Linear Collider(AFLC) Ne ~ 100 GeV Module Ne ~ 1 GeV drive beam ~ 100 GeV Module ~ 1 GeV drive beam Major features: Short pulses (<20 ns), high gradient (200 ~ 300 MV/m) Drive beam structure directly Scale: ~200MeV/m = 1GeV/5m = 100GeV/500m = 500GeV/2.5km W.Gai Strawman Based on R&D at AWA in dielectric structures & two beam acceleration.

H. Weerts ANL-Chicago_FNAL mtg; Feb. 2, 2008 LHC—ATLAS/CMS LHC will dominate the landscape of HEP in next decade(s) Fermilab: involved in LHC & CMS detector only, LHC/CMS center for all of US, CMS computing & software Argonne: ATLAS detector only, one of 3 or 4 ATLAS Analysis centers in US, ATLAS software Chicago: ATLAS detector only; ATLAS Tier 2 YKK has started an interaction between all three institutions. Regular meetings to define. Northern Illinois can be center for LHC physics in US. (should be)

H. Weerts ANL-Chicago_FNAL mtg; Feb. 2, 2008 10 Summary A lot of potential for (mutually beneficial) collaboration between our institutions. Collaboration up to now been defined by the need of one and expertise in another or some other “chance” interaction We should be more pro-active in identifying areas of collaboration Situation much improved over a few years ago ( after al we have these meetings !!!) Handicap: labs are funded to do certain things and have goals; this requires some flexibility at start of a collaborative new direction. Set up a structure charged with doing this
