Breadth of Potential Mentees Learners –Students –Residents –Fellows –Behavioral Health Trainees Requires awareness of boundary ambiguity regarding Therapy – Supervision - Mentoring Staff Other Faculty Chairs Others?

Modified World Café - Exercise Create questions to which answers would have value around mentoring – our questions in the workshop were: 1. For what reasons or issues have you sought mentoring, or in retrospect, when could it have been useful? 2. What were the mentor skills and/or qualities that you found most helpful as a mentee? 3. Based on your experience or knowledge of mentoring, what are some barriers or challenges to effective mentoring relationships? 4. Reflecting on your professional context, who are the people (roles not names) who could benefit from your mentoring?

Exercise – continued Have your group count off by 4’s to create your question groups Each question is placed a color specific packet of papers – 4 colors are needed for 4 questions Give the appropriate question to each person who called off that number Ask each person to interview 2 people with their question who is in another color/question group Timeline for this exercise is in the notes section below

Exercise – continued Next phase is for all the same question people to gather at one corner of the room where you have posted blank pieces of paper with just the question # on the top of the page. The groups should convene in the appropriate corner, share their interview results and summarize their themes on the flip chart paper (timeline for this also in notes) Group should define a scribe, a timekeeper and a report out to the larger group person. Summarized themes are presented by the reporter for each group. You could then have each group rotate to other stations and add their “2 cents” as an additional component (not done here)

There will always be a reason why you meet people. Either you need to change your life or you’re the one who will change theirs. –author unknown

10 Ways to be a Good Mentor (Blue Sky Coaching) Be credible Be a positive role model Be genuinely interested in your mentee as an individual Share your experiences and insights Ask open questions

10 Ways to be a Good Mentor (continued) Act as a sounding board Provide a fresh perspective Provide helpful feedback Acknowledge achievements Offer advice but only if mentee asks for it

The best mentors are those who show you where to look but do not tell you what to see. -Alexandra Trentor

Please take a moment quietly to consider and then use your peer mentor to help you think through: –How can you increase your mentoring activity in your professional home? –Who or what people/groups are you considering? –How will you make yourself available? –What is your intention? –What are potential challenges? Use your peer mentor to help you articulate and document a plan!
