CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Overview of the presentation Development of HY-2 Satellite Data Acquisition and Distribution Application Achievements Development of CFOSAT satellite Main Data product of CFOSAT satellite Future Plans

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Development of HY-2 Satellite Chinese ocean satellite and its application has achieved rapid development under the leadership and support by the CNSA. HY-2 satellite series is ocean dynamic environment satellites which are designed to obtain ocean surface wind vectors, sea surface height, significant wave height and sea surface temperature of global oceans. HY-2A, which was launched on Aug. 16, 2011, carries four microwave payloads and is capable of observing oceans in all-weather all-time conditions. The four payloads are Microwave Scatterometer (MS), Radar Altimeter (RA), Scanning Microwave Radiometer (SMR), and Calibration Microwave Radiometer (CMR). As of Aug. 2014, HY-2A has been operating normally for near 3 years.

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Data Acquisition and Distribution National Satellite Ocean Application Service (NSOAS), which is a commonweal institution under SOA, is responsible for receiving, processing, archiving, managing, and distributing all collected data and products of HY satellites. NSOAS owns four ground stations which are located at Beijing, Mudanjiang, Sanya and Hangzhou, respectively. In 2012, NSOAS ground station received raw data of HY-2A reached 4.3TB. In 2013, NSOAS received raw data of HY-2A is 4.2TB, respectively. You can apply and get the HY-2’s Production FTP from:www.nsoas.gov.cn just need fill an application user form.www.nsoas.gov.cn

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Data Acquisition and Distribution Main Product The SST product derived by HY-2A/SMR on Jan. 22, 2014 The Global ocean SST fusion product on Dec. 3, 2013 derived with HY-2A/SMR and other available SST source HY-2A/SMR is capable of observing SST of more than 90% global oceans every data, the product of Jan. 22, 2014 is shown above. In additon, NSOAS provides global ocean SST fusion products based on HY-2A/SMR and other available SST data sources.

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Data Acquisition and Distribution Marine Dynamic Environment Parameters SSH product example SWH product example OWV product example HY-2A observes marine dynamic environment parameters every data including Sea Surface Height (SSH), Significant Wave Height (SWH), Ocean Wind vectors (OWV), Sea Surface Temperature, Water Vapor Content, etc. The SSH, SWH and OWV products observed by HY-2A on Jan. 22, 2014 are presented above.

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Data Acquisition and Distribution Nowadays, SSH data fusion of all available RD sources is the only practical approach to obtain more complete global SSH products of every data. NSOAS provides HY-2A/RD meshing products, and one example is shown as follows: The global OWV fusion product on July 9, 2013 derived with HY-2A/MS data and other available data sources. A global SSH meshing product provided by HY-2A/RD

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Data Acquisition and Distribution – Product distribution HY satellite products are distributed to both domestic and international users via internet, dedicated communication systems and manual services, etc. CNES COMMENT: The IGDR products of HY-2A have been successfully ingested in the DUACS test systems and multi-altimeter maps for a few months now. The quality is stable and very good. The external release of DUACS maps with HY-2A measurements should start today(19 May).

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Data Acquisition and Distribution – Product distribution The HY-2 Production is exchanged and shared with EUMETSAT. It is continue cooperation with EUMETSAT on the HY-2 NRT data received by FMI Polar Station and sharing the NRT data.

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Application Achievements – Ocean Disaster Surveillance--Tropical Cyclones Nowadays, there are only two space-born data sources for global ocean vector wind observation which are HY-2A/MS and ASCAT; The major advantage of HY-2A/MS is that its swath, which is about 1500km, is much wider than that of Metop/ASCAT. Wind observing data of No. 15 typhoon “Bolaven” in 2012 By comparing above,, it is very clear that the swath of HY-2A/MS is much wider than that of Metop/ASCAT. HY-2A/MS ASCAT

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS HY-2A/MS monitoring data of No. 14 typhoon “Libra” from Aug. 21 to Aug. 26 in 2012. Continuous monitoring results of the No. 14 typhoon “Libra” in 2012 are shown above. From HY-2/MS data, we are capable of clearly observing the position, strength, extent and structure of a tropical cyclone.

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Application Achievements – Marine Environment Forecast The data of SST, OSVW, SSH, SWH derived by HY-2A are all applied in both conventional and numerical forecast, and improve the effectiveness and accuracy of ocean forecast. A Northwestern Pacific SST product example which is released to users by the CCTV-13 TV channel

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Application Achievements – Fishery Forecast Based on the chlorophyll, SST, and SSH data derived by HY-2A, NSOAS has developed fishery forecast models and constructed an operational ocean fishery information forecast system. One fishery forecast example is shown as below: The Sept. 13, 2013 forecast of Northern Pacific squid fishery including the SST and current information.

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Application Achievements – Navigation Safeguard On Jan. 2, 2014, Chinese icebreaker Snow Dragon stuck in Antarctic ice after conducting a rescue of all crews on the Russian vessel Akademik Shokalskiy. The ice and wind information in the reports made a contribution to the safety escaping of Snow Dragon. Actually, the above event is just a typical example of the operational navigation safeguard service provide by NSOAS based on HY satellites. A map of the ice condition around Snow Dragon in the reports provided by NSOAS

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Development of CFOSAT satellite CFOSAT is designed to provide at the global scale, observations of wind at the ocean surface and spectral properties of surface ocean waves. The CFOSAT satellite project has completed the phase C and the whole subsystem has started phase D. China’s ground segment have completed the design scheme, which consists of 5 subsystems.

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Main Data product of CFOSAT satellite SWIM the significant wave height (SWH) of waves, the surface wind speed, the backscattering coefficient of the surface with respects to the incidence angles, the directional wave spectra. SCAT Time-ordered earth-located backscattering coefficient, Surface type flagged backscattering coefficient and atmospheric attenuations on gridded surface resolution cells, Surface type flagged wind speeds and directions and atmospheric attenuations on gridded surface resolution cells.

CNSA, May 22 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Future Plans China has formulated and implemented several medium- and long-term national plans on the development of HY satellites. We will establish an operational satellite development plan with CNSA and advance the satellite application system using the R&D satellite( GF-3 satellite). The CFOSAT project will complete the quality model test, interface tests, flight model design and manufacture etc.
