How did the colonist survive? Many did not survive, Why? Soil was too poor to farm and they had very little fresh water. Who is John Smith? Credited with saving the colony He met the Indian chief Powhatan and traded corn and other crops Jamestown

How did the Native Americans and colonist work together? The Native Americans taught the colonist how to grow tobacco and other crops Tobacco became a cash crop for the colonist In 1619 the first slaves have arrived to work in the tobacco fields Jamestown

Cash Crop A cash crop is a crop that is grown just to be sold and make money off of it Crop A crop is grown to be used by the farmer, whether that is to feed his family or his livestock Cash Crop?

Plymouth (Massachusetts) In 1620 the Pilgrims left the Church of England; they were in search of religious freedom The Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth in November, which was too late to grow crops. So how did they survive winter? The Pilgrims received help from the local Native Americans; still almost half of the original number had died. The Second Colony

When the spring arrived, the Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn, hunt deer and turkey, and fish For the one year anniversary the Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated with a three day harvest festival (first Thanksgiving) in the Fall of 1621 Pilgrims and Native Americans
