2 Emotions are part of who we are. Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize emotions in ourselves and others. People rely on each other to get things done and that means understanding each other’s motives. Collaboration and team work are affected by emotional intelligence. Good ability to recognize emotions allows us to navigate social situations better. It allows us to get along better and influence others.

10 The value of being able to identify emotions in others.  1) Whose emotions would it be important to identify and why?  2) Why would it be important to identify people’s feelings at home? At school? At work?  3) Where else might it be useful to identify emotions?

11 1) Let’s take the primary emotions: love, anger, fear, sadness, and joy. How would someone know when you are feeling those feelings? What does your face look like? What does your body (posture, gestures, etc.) look like?  2) Can we always read someone’s emotions from their face or body language?  3) Are there times you put on a “social mask,” so to speak and try to hide your feelings? Why?  4) When you are feeling _________, what kind of behavior do you want or need from others?  5) How might what we discussed today benefit you?
