2 What are Mnemonic Devices?  Learning technique to help with memory retention  Can be Key words or Musical  Mnemonic comes from Ancient Greek Related to Mnemosyne, the ancient goddess of memory

3 Keyword Mnemonic  This strategy helps to match key words to a visual image  Can be done by audio or visual means

4 Examples  Vocabulary Aberration- abnormal. In Southern California, it’s abnormal to be cold and say “berr”  Can also be done with lists or stories There was once a negative boy who could not decide whether or not to go to the radical party. Should he be square and not meet four awesome chicks? Or go and stay out until over 2Am?

5 Musical Mnemonics  Use of a tune, melody, or music as a memory tool  Good strategy for students with learning disabilities Memory is higher when supported by a melody Memory becomes fun, thus students are more motivated More motivation also increases attention
