1 HERBS Ellen Strother Clemson University Extension Add Corporate Logo Here To insert your company logo on this slide From the Insert Menu Select “Picture” Locate your logo file Click OK To resize the logo Click anywhere inside the logo. The boxes that appear outside the logo are known as “resize handles.” Use these to resize the object. If you hold down the shift key before using the resize handles, you will maintain the proportions of the object you wish to resize.

2 HERBS are: “Any plant that may be used for pleasure, fragrance or physic.” Herb Society of America, HSA Plants may be annual, biennial, tender perennial, perennial, bulbs, trees or shrubs Many popular herbs are herbaceous (have non-woody stems)

3 HERBS (definition) Examples of herbaceous herbs: basil, borage, dill, parsley Examples of woody herbs: lavender, rosemary, sage, thyme

4 Herbs in the landscape: Add fragrance Add foliar texture May be used in the perennial border May be used in the vegetable garden May be in a garden by themselves –Culinary herb gardens are usually located near the house, close to the kitchen

5 Success in the landscape: Full sun (six or more hours of direct sun per day) in most cases Extremely well-drained soil Moderate, not high, soil fertility Frequent trimming/cutting back [See Table 14-13 for list and propagation methods]

8 Container Gardens in the landscape: Utilize small spaces –windowsills –patios –city balcony –doorstep –stairs

9 Containers: Anything goes! –Teapots –tool boxes –cinder blocks –fruit baskets –conventional clay or plastic pots

10 Successful containers: Drain well –Pot has holes in the bottom Promote aeration –Use light soil mix Don’t tip over –Place sand in bottom of pot to anchor it

11 Success in the landscape: Proper sun exposure Proper planting techniques –Maintain same planting depth Proper watering –Water until excess comes out bottom of pot –Dump excess water from container’s bottom tray/saucer –Containers on pavement dry out fast
