5 Tire Construction Tread Area Rib Tread Block Grooves Sipes Shoulder
Cap Plies Steel Belts Tread – provides traction and cornering grip for the tire and is designed to resist wear, abrasion and heat. Tread blocks or lugs are the individual block of tread on the tread area. These contain sipes or narrow voids which improve flexibility of the lug to deform when cornering, and reduces heat build up. Grooves – or rain grooves, is a design element of the tread pattern specifically arranged to channel water away from the tread area. Shoulder – is the part of the tire at the edge of the tread as it makes transition to the sidewall. Cap plies ( Crown plies or belts) – provide the ridged base for the tread. Radial Plies (Carcass ply) – is the layer above the inner liner and consists of thin textile fiber cords or cables bonded into the rubber. These cables are largely responsible for determining the strength of the tire. Beads – the bead clamps firmly against the tire’s rim to ensure an airtight fit and keep the tire properly seated on the rim. TREAD 2 POLYESTER + 2 STEEL + 1 NYLON SIDEWALL 2 POLYESTER The branding in this example identifies that molded into the rubber under the centerline of the tread lies two radial body plies of polyester cord, two belts of angled steel cord and one circumferential cap ply of nylon cord. It also identifies that in each sidewall at the widest points between the tire's inner and outer sidewalls (tire section width) lies two radial body plies of polyester cord (a continuation of the same two body plies that were listed under the centerline of the tread). 6 Tire Sidewall Specification Breakdown
245/40 R18 97V XL 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Tire Width Nominal aspect ratio in % Tire code Rim Diameter Load Bearing Index Speed rating Extra Load 1 – Tire width shows the nominal tire width in millimeters. 2 – Aspect ratio is the size ratio between the tire height and tire width in percent :Example: 40 Sidewall’s height is approx. 40% of the tire’s width. 3 – The Tire code specifies the tire type, “R” represents Radial construction in this case. 4 – Rim diameter is the diameter of the bead seat, not the diameter of the rim flange. Rim diameter is specified in inches (in). 5 – Load bearing index is a numerical code that specifies the maximum load-bearing capacity of the tire under certain conditions. 6 – Speed rating specifies the approved maximum speed of the tire. Example: V = Speeds up to 149mph. 7 – Extra Load: additional reinforced side wall construction allowing greater load index. George Krzyzanowski / Tires / 10/10/2013

7 Mercedes-Benz MO Tires
Mercedes Original tires have been Developed specifically by each tire manufacturer and approved by Daimler AG Rigorously tested under extreme conditions Carefully inspected to ensure ultimate quality Testing done under many different parameters Test drives under a wide range of conditions Various road surfaces Sensitivity testing for comfort on oscillation test bench Lateral force performance and directional stability -Michelin, Continental, Pirelli, Dunlop, Bridgestone, Goodyear. 9 Mercedes-Benz MOExtended Tires
Extended mobility tires with run-flat characteristic Self-supporting sidewalls Comfort-optimized run flat tire Typical run-flat disadvantages Increased loading on suspension and body Reduced ride comfort Increased rolling resistance Typical run-flat advantages Increased emergency range under any loading range Continue to drive your vehicle even if there is a total loss of pressure on one or more tires. MOExtended tires may only be used in conjunction with an active tire pressure monitor system and approved DAG wheels. Disadvantages of MOE tires are increased rolling resistance = decreased mpg fuel consumption. George Krzyzanowski / Tires / 10/10/2013

10 Notes on MOExtended Tires WIS Document: AH40.10-P-0010-01A
MOExtended distance: Approx. 50 miles (80km) when vehicle is partially loaded Approx. 19 miles (30km) when vehicle is fully loaded Permissible maximum speed: 50 mph (80km/h) must not be exceeded Repair of damaged MOExtended tires is not permitted By using TIREFIT the MOExtended running distance can be significantly increased in the event of minor damage George Krzyzanowski / Tires / 10/10/2013

12 Summer Tires To be used in warm weather conditions.
Temperatures below 45°F (+7°C) Summer tires lose elasticity significantly, therefore traction and braking distance diminish Do not store summer tires below 20°F (-7°C) due to compounds may crack. George Krzyzanowski / Tires / 10/10/2013

14 Life Cycle & Break In New Tires
In this example: DOT U2LL LMLR5107 Manufactured during 51st week of the year Manufactured during 2007 US D.O.T Compliance followed by Tire Identification Number Tires made up of many layers of rubber, steel and fabric, due to these different components, your new tires require a break in period to ensure that they deliver their normal ride quality and maximum performance.
