This busy composition of strong horizontals displays Job pressed unwillingly to his bed between a malevolent God-figure – Satan as the serpent bearing Angel of Light – and a fiery abyss beneath. Arms belonging to Satan's ministers reach out of the sea of flames and torment Job by trapping him in a grotesque embrace and preparing to chain him down within his terrible imagination indefinitely. Satan takes the image of Job as God has done hitherto this scene, but in this instance the mirror-image is an alarming distortion portraying Job as a deranged and harassed anthropomorphic being, from whom Job himself recoils with a grimace. The unified expression of this plate is one of instability and fragmentation. The angular forms that interlock to create the setting of Job's nightmare vision constantly shift and never settle, and the border design which encapsulates the entire scene is a fragile network of wavering lines that only project the ephemeral and quivering intensity of this illustration. Blake has prescribed to this plate a furious rush of energy that is uncontainable and originates from the central figure of God. Job and his wife are knelt in prayer before him while the comforters cower and are physically squashed by the apparition. The sweeping whirlwind surges forth into the border and bends huge trees and branches to the ground in a chaotic flurry – this might indicate Job's unbreakable character in the face of all his awful trials. Above God, at the top of the illustration, the wind guides a chain of spirit figures, some of which take the form of an embryonic Job, his sentience identifiable only by the vague suggestion of a flowing beard surrounding his preeminent gaunt features. This hallucinatory association between the figures of Job and God takes its strongest depiction yet in the act of the former literally being a material emanation within the latter's aura. They are the two much-loved chief Arahats (saints) in the Buddhist tradition, and feature in the Dhammapada. Moggallāna is dark in colour because of his somewhat chequered past in his previous lives. In his notes to the poem, Darwin explains that in Egyptian mythology, because the annual 'monsoon' of the Nile coincided with rise of the dog-Star, it was associated with the dog-god Anubis. In the background, above the river, is the figure of Jupitus Pluvius, the rain-giver. He is shown as a bearded old man with his arms outstretched.
