Gun and Shell factory was established in 1801 in the name of Gun carriage agency by the East India Company for repair and manufacture of gun carriages. Now,it is a fully fledged engineering factory engaged in manufacturing of ammunition hardware and ordnance stores for army, navy and other civil sectors.

Centering Parting Turning Facing Threading Boring Drilling Grinding Knurling Grooving Rifling Honning

Centering is the operation of producing conical holes in workpieces. To prepare a cylindrical wok piece for centereing, it is first necessary to locate the centre hole by marking off.

PARTING Parting off is the operation of cutting a work piece after it has been machined to the desired size and shape. The process involves rotating the work piece on a chuck or faceplate at half the speed of turning and feeding by a narrow parting off tool perpendicular to the lathe axis.

Turning in a lathe is to remove excess material from the work piece to produce a cone - shaped or a cylindrical surface. The various types of turning made in lathe work for various purposes.

Facing is the operation of machining the ends of a piece of work to produce a flat surface square with the axis. This is also used to cut the work of required length.

THREADING The principle of thread cutting is to produce a helical groove on a cylindrical or conical surface by feeding the tool longitudinally when the job is revolved between centres or by a chuck.

Boring is the operation of enlarging and truing a hole produced by drilling, punching, casting or forging. Boring cannot originate a hole.

Drilling is the operation of producing a cylindrical hole in a work piece by the rotating cutting edge of a cutter known as drilling.

GRINDING It is a process of removing metal in the form of minute chips by feeding the work against a rotating abrasive wheel known as the grinding wheel. The feeding is done by the carriage and the depth of cut is provided by the cross-slide.

Knurling is the process of embossing a diamond shaped pattern on the surface of a work piece. The purpose of knurling is to provide an effective gripping surface on a work piece to prevent it from slipping when operated by hand.

Grooving is the process of reducing the diameter of a work piece over a very narrow surface. It is often done at the end of a thread or adjacent to a shoulder to leave a small margin.

RIFLING Rifling is the process of making helical grooves in the barrel of a gun or firearm, which imparts a spin to a projectile around its long axis. This spin serves to gyroscopically stabilize the projectile, improving its aerodynamic stability and accuracy.

HONING Honing is an abrasive machining process that produces a precision surface on a metal work piece by scrubbing an abrasive stone against it along a controlled path. Honing is primarily used to improve the geometric form of a surface, but may also improve the surface texture.
