Free Powerpoint Templates Page 1 Negating In LD Approaches to writing and executing the Negative Case

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 2 Overview: What it means to negate On any given topic there are burdens placed on the affirmative which must be met to affirm, or must be explained away. Burdens in the current resolution?

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 3 What Good Negative Cases Look Like… 1. Arguments 2. Good rhetoric 3. Strategic vision 4. Meets obligation to clash!!

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 4 Getting Started Write your affirmative case and negate it. Research “Offensive” reasons to vote negative! Bottom up! Framework contentions

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 5 The Fight for Ground! At its heart negating is a fight for ground Aff Arugm ents Negative Arguments What arguments belong to the negative? Which belong to the affirmative? Zero sum game, if you demonstrate it negates, they can’t use in to affirm.

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 6 Kind of negative argumentation Why neg is good, NOT why aff is bad.(comparison still needed – clash) Or, why the neg is on balance, better than the aff. Or, why you can’t affirm – straight negation Why the resolution is flawed. (critique)

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 7 A Team Tactic for Writing the Negative: Brainstorm Why should we negate: say anything that comes to mind. Are there some of these that seem to belong together? Why? What contentions can we develop from this exercise?

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 8 Example Brainstorm Brain drain Communication issues  implications for (undercuts) democracy/order  electoral college?? (be careful because this is US specific) Create chaos in welfare system (structure of the Western welfare system in danger) Crime Destroying cultural identity Education cost AT: nonprofits that encompass undocumented immigrants’ education Higher cost of living because of overpopulation  increases pressure on welfare state

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 9 Brainstorm 2 Increased backlash/discrimination by natives (nativism and xenophobia) Increased drugs (the more open the borders, the more open movement of cartels) Increased pressure on law enforcement + budget problems  higher brutality rates  riots No implementation Outside ideals interfering with national politics Overpopulation – AT alleviate overpopulation in developing countries (defensive argument) Terrorism Who has access to this right?

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 10 Categories from Brainstorm Economic, Political, Security, Social Once you have grouped the items form the brainstorm, you have a set of potential contentions that are easier to craft into a narrative, a story of why you negate. For example, your thesis could be: Immigration is good for the world economy. –Decrease world poverty –Increase world GNP –Better allocation of resources – free market, supply and demand.

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 11 General strategies for negative cases 1.Have a thesis 2.For the narrative, Five questions I.What is the problem your case addresses? II.Who is the villain of this problem? III.Who is (are) the victims of this problem? IV.Who is the hero that will solve this problem V.What is the commonsense solution to this problem? 3. Keep it short and focused!

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 12 Strategic vision Layers –The top stuff –Pre-standards –Skepticism –Necessary but insufficient burdens –Default Negative –Definitions Take out/ neutralize aff VC

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 13 Role of Blocks and CX Use to set up negative case/ rebuttals In lab and or other breakout sessions.

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 14 Rebuttals Tactics Very helpful in meeting obligation to clash Turns Outweighing Defensive arguments –On evidence –Non-unique impacts/disads Will be covered in labs and other breakouts!

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 15 Fleshing out the Negative Case ONE great article Add evidence and variety to your case Find a book

Free Powerpoint Templates Page 16 Other Approaches On and off case distinctions Counterplans Kiritiks Topicality/theory
