{ DNA Structure & Discovery Double helix, proteins, base pairs, hydrogen bond. Warm-up Questions: In all plant and animal cells, the nucleus contains long molecules of DNA. Which of the following best describes the function of DNA? (6A) DNA provides the shape and structure of the nucleus. DNA packages materials for transport through the nucleus. DNA carries materials into and out of the nucleus. DNA contains the blueprint for producing the whole organism. What phase is shown in the image below?

DNA was first identified and isolated by Friedrich Miescher in 1869. Discovery & Study In 1953, scientists James Watson and Francis Crick published their findings on the double helix structure of DNA. They based their work on one of their colleagues at King's College in London - Rosalind Franklin, an x-ray diffraction expert whose images of DNA proteins in the early 1950s revealed a helix shape.

DNA Structure DNA is a polymer made up of a series of nucleotides. There are four different types of nucleotides found in DNA, differing only in the nitrogenous base. Each is known by the first letter. A is for adenine G is for guanine C is for cytosine T is for thymine DNA has what is known as a double helix structure, much like a twisted ladder. The side rails of the ladder are what is known as the sugar phosphate back bone of the DNA and provides support for the structure if the DNA.

DNA Structure Cont. Each side of the DNA strand run in opposite directions of each other. The term DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. The nucleotides pair together in a specific way, A pairs with T and G pairs with C.

CANDY DNA!!!!!!!! We will now create models of DNA using candy. You will have licorice and your sugar phosphate backbone. You will then pair your gummy bears correctly (A with T and G with C). Once paired, you will run toothpicks through them and attack to your backbone sides in any order you like. Once complete, you will twist your strand and show it to me for a grade. Red=A Orange=T Green=G Yellow=C
