4 Commit yourself to trying this exercise this week: Snack don’t Binge
The Zeigarnik effect Commit yourself to trying this exercise this week: Snack don’t Binge Set aside an hour a week where you will be completely undisturbed Split the hour up evenly into 15 minute segments For 15/20 minutes at a time- review the week’s work in each course: Check your notes are clear, legible and in order Summarise your learning in a quick diagram/mind-map or a few lines of notes Highlight/circle stuff you’ve found hard – things to work on during your independent study time Go through the jobs you’ve been given, and the deadlines, and make a prioritised list for the week ahead The more disorganised your learning is, the harder it is to start any study task.  Keeping everything neat will avoid a “blocker” from taking hold!

6 The Five Whys A common problem solving technique used in business is
The Five Whys. It was developed by Toyota Industries to solve problems with manufacturing. The basis of The Five Whys is to start with defining your problem and then ask WHY until you reach the root cause of the problem (usually in five steps). The root cause is what needs to be changed to stop the same problem happening again!

7 The Five Whys Here is an example of a problem: My friend isn’t happy with me 1. Why? (because) I didn't give her a birthday present (first why) 2. Why? (because) I didn’t have time to get her a present (second why) 3. Why? (because) I was behind with my other work (third why) 4. Why? (because) I spent too much time updating my Facebook page (fourth why) 5. Why? (because) I didn’t prioritise my time well this week… (this is the ROOT CAUSE) Solution:  Prioritise your time better in future!

8 Focus on Organisation What defines an organised person?
Self organisation Time management Having a goal & a level commitment

9 How to get organised? Using a planner Organising the “stuff”
Independent learning diary Lists of things to do – can’t remember everything! Weekly schedule for learning Organising the “stuff” Pack your bag the night before! A4 notepads – 1 per subject Folders, dividers At home organisation Effective study habits Learning space at home

10 Which are you?

11 Self organisation matters
What are you going to do about your self organisation? Would your phone help you? Reminders, to do lists, events in calendar, pictures?

12 a story about time management
Rocks, pebbles, sand: a story about time management

13 Rocks, pebbles, sand Prioritise your “to do list” every day
Be honest about priorities  Do the most involved or difficult task on your list first: this will give you a real sense of achievement (don’t stall by filling your time with unimportant tasks)  Vary your task list e.g. don’t set yourself three reading tasks in a row, aim for variety

14 What zaps your time? Remember back to last week’s session when we thought about what our distractors are. Some of these are time zappers Which ones did you identify as distractors are your time wasting activities? Facebook Watching youtube clips Listening to music and zoning out to it
