2 THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE SAMPLE MEAN CENTRAL LIMIT THEOREM A-) FROM A NORMAL POPULATION If x 1,x 2,…………,x n is a random variable of size n taken from a normal distribution with mean µ and variance σ 2 such that X ~ N( µ, σ 2 ), then the distribution of x̄ is also normal and x̄ ~ N( µ, σ 2 /n), where x̄ = (x 1 +x 2 +…………+x n )/n The distribution of the sample mean (x̄) is known as the sampling distribution of means and the standard deviation of this distribution σ/ √n is known as the standard error of the mean
