Brief recap… Phonics is all about using … skills for reading and spelling knowledge of the alphabet Learning phonics will help your child to become a good reader and writer. Tuesday 17 th March 2016Phonics Screening Check

Brief recap… Every child in Reception and KS1 - daily phonics. We use the Letters and Sounds planning document to support the teaching of phonics and Jolly Phonics. There are 6 phonics phases which the children work through at their own pace. Sounds should be articulated clearly and precisely. Try not to add an ‘uh’ on the end! Sounds do vary with different accents. Blending – b/e/d = bed Segmenting bed = b/e/d Split digraph – “i-e” Tuesday 17 th March 2016Phonics Screening Check

What is it? The National screening check for all Year 1 children in England. The aim of the check is to ensure that all children are able to read using a phonics approach. Last year the National expected level was 32/40. Tuesday 17 th March 2016Phonics Screening Check

What does it look like? Consists of 40 words – 20 real/ 20 pseudo. Normally takes 10/15 minutes to do. Tuesday 17 th March 2016Phonics Screening Check

What is expected? The check is very similar to tasks the children already complete during phonics lessons. Children will be asked to ‘sound out’ a word and blend the sounds together eg d-o-g - dog The focus of the check is to see which sounds the children know and therefore the children will be asked to read made up ‘nonsense’ words. There will not be any words that cannot be decoded like “the”. Tuesday 17 th March 2016Phonics Screening Check

Watch out, Aliens! Nonsense words will feature in the check (for example, ‘bim’ and ‘tox’), to see whether children can apply phonics rules correctly. In the screening the nonsense words will have a picture of an alien with it. This helps the children know that the word is not real. chom Tuesday 17 th March 2016Phonics Screening Check

Examples… Tuesday 17 th March 2016Phonics Screening Check

When? Where? Who? During the month of June, a week will be announced once it has been set by the Gov. The children cannot retake the check at any other time so it is very important your child is in school during this week. In a quiet area, for 10-15 minutes. Completed 1:1 by the Class Teacher. All Year 1 children and any Year 2 children who did not meet the expected level in Year 1. Tuesday 17 th March 2016Phonics Screening Check

In school support… 20 minutes of phonics every day. ½ termly screening checks to look at progress. ½ termly phonics checks to personalise teaching. Phonics support groups run by TA’s and Class Teachers. Tuesday 17 th March 2016Phonics Screening Check

Reporting to parents… By the end of the summer term all schools must report each child's results to their parents. They will also confirm if the child has met the standard threshold. Children who do not achieve the expected level will retake the test when they are in Year 2. April 2nd 2015Presentation title

How can you help at home? READING – 10 minutes every day can make the difference, build it into your routine. WRITING – when writing practice using the sound mats – support with breaking down of spellings. GAMES – the internet is full of phonic games to support this learning in a fun way. Focus on the unusual sound patterns (split digraphs, trigraphs and alternative digraphs) Tuesday 17 th March 2016Phonics Screening Check

Remember… Phonics is not the only thing needed to become a fluent reader. Please continue to read with your child each night and encourage them to: Sound out Re-read to check it makes sense. Use pictures for clues. Ask questions about the book. And most importantly ENJOY READING! Tuesday 17 th March 2016Phonics Screening Check
