Became more influential after Stolypin’s murder… The Tsar’s opponents said R’s influence was a sign of Nicholas’ unfitness to rule… … murdered by several nobles in 1916…

9 The long and painful death of Rasputin…

10 Why were these cartoons made? What was the PoV of the artist? How is this shown?

11 SOURCE 1: Letters from Alexandra to Rasputin were stolen and found their way into newspapers. Some historians think they were altered. This is an extract from one of them… “My beloved, unforgettable teacher, redeemer, mentor! How tiresome it is without you. My soul is quiet and I relax only when you, my teacher, are here beside me. I kiss your hands and lean on your blessed shoulders… will you soon again be close to me? Come quickly, I am waiting for you and I am tormenting myself for you… I love you for ever”. SOURCE 2: A description of Rasputin by Stolypin, the Tsar’s Chief Minister, who disapproved of him… He ran his pale eyes over me, mumbled mysterious and inarticulate words from the Scriptures and made strange movements with his hands. I began to feel indescribable loathing for the vermin sitting opposite me. Still, I did realise that the man possessed great hypnotic power… How useful are sources 1 & 2 to a historian studying Rasputin’s influence on Nicholas and Alexandra? Use the sources and your own knowledge. [Make sure to address PROVENANCE also]
