TITLE: THE PERIODIC TABLE L.O. SWBAT describe properties of the periodic table.

4 Mendeleev’s Periodic Table Mendeleev Russian scientist that first created the Periodic Table. Arranged elements by their chemical and physical properties Example: Fluorine and Chlorine are gases that irritate the lungs and form similar compounds. Discovered that elements follow a pattern

Mendeleev’s Predictions He arranged 63 known elements Predicted three elements had yet to be discovered what their properties would be 16 years later a published chemist discovered the missing elements. scandium, gallium, and germanium 6

Periodic table is color coded. This line separates the metals from the nonmetals. Atomic # Atomic mass

Color code your periodic table! = non metal = semi-metal= metal = inert gases

9 The Periodic Table of Elements Inert Gasses

10 Modern Periodic Table Big Idea: Properties of an element can be predicted from its location on the periodic table. The modern Periodic Table elements are arranged into rows and columns in order of increasing atomic number. The atomic number of an element equals the number of protons in an atom of that element. 10

Elements are organized into rows called periods. There are 7 periods. Metals are on the left of the table, with the most reactive metals on the far left. Decreasing reactivity of metals Increasing Atomic Mass

Elements are organized into columns called groups. There are 18 groups. Groups consist of elements with similar characteristics. Example, Group 1 elements react violently with water, Group 2 react slowly with water or not at all.

Summary Write a paragraph (3-4 sentences) reflecting on today’s lesson. Today I learned about… Describe how Mendeleev organized the periodic table of elements.

Independent Work Textbook 314-317 Vocabulary late work Chapter 9 lesson 1 word+definition+picture Word find + word and definition in notebook
