2. Comparatives Comparatives: words that describe the difference between things An ‘adjective’ describes a noun (ie. John is FAST), but a comparative is a modified adjective (ie. Bill is FASTER) used to compare 2+ things. For Example: The computer is new, but the TV is newer. *Usually, to make a comparative, we just add ‘er’*

What are superlatives???  Adjectives are words that describe nouns (ie. fast)  Superlatives are adjectives that are modified to create a comparison to find who is the BEST (ie. Who is the fastest?) 6. Superlatives: Grammar Rules 1. Superlatives of one syllable words/ajectives are made by adding “est” Example: Kind = Kindest 2. If the word ends in an “e,” only the “st” is added Example: Nice = Nicest 3. If the word ends in a single consonant preceded by a single vowel, the final consonant is doubled Example: Hot = Hottest 4. A two syllable adjective that ends in “y” replaces the “y” with “i” Example: Happy = Happiest

7. Superlatives: More Rules! 1. Superlatives that have three or more syllables are made by adding “the most” before the word Example: Beautiful = the most beautiful Energetic= the most energetic Superlatives of two syllable words that don’t end in “y” are random! Superlatives of two syllable words that don’t end in “y” are random! Examples: Patient = the most patient honest = the most honest simple = the simplest quiet = the quietest
