1 Fall 2015 Spring 2015 VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE COORDINATOR’S INFORMATION

2 WHY IS THIS INITIATIVE IMPORTANT?

3  Social Studies Curriculum  Civic Responsibility  Active Participation In Democratic Process  Part Of The District’s Strategic Plan TEACHING STUDENTS THE IMPORTANCE OF VOTING AND ELECTIONS

4 DISTRICT GOAL By 2020, WCPSS will annually graduate at least 95% of its students ready for productive citizenship as well as higher education or a career.

6 GUIDING LEGISLATION AND CRITICAL DATES

7  Eliminates pre-registration of 16- and 17- year-olds  Requires high schools to have a “sufficient supply” of registration forms  Photo ID will be required starting with elections in 2016 For the full text of the law, use this link: http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/Sessions/2013/Bills/House/PDF/H589v8.pdf HOUSE BILL 589 (ENACTED AUGUST 2013)

8  Fall Drive: August 31-September 9  Spring Drive: January 4-13  Anyone that will be 18 years old by November 8, 2016 can register and VOTE in the March primary. VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE DATES FOR 2015-16

9  For the Fall Drive:  In Cary & Raleigh Residents:  Students must be 18 on or before October 6, 2015 to register.  All Other Residents:  Must be 18 on or before November 3, 2015 to register  For the Spring Drive, students must 18 on or before November 8, 2016 to register. WHO CAN REGISTER?

10 IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOLS

11  It is illegal to offer any type of prize or incentive that encourages people to register to vote.  Do not fill out parts of the form for anyone.  Do not make corrections to forms.  Do not attempt to influence party affiliation.  Do not seal a form if the owner of the form did not seal it.  Students should not handle other students’ completed forms.  Completed forms must be stored in a locked, secure location. GENERAL RULES

12  Give to your API no later than the afternoon of  September 9 (Fall Drive)  API Meeting on September 10  January 13 (Spring Drive)  API Meeting on January 14 TURNING FORMS IN

13  All comprehensive high schools are receiving 300 forms in English and 50 forms in Spanish  Small schools will receive 50-100 forms in English and 25-50 forms in Spanish  Extra forms should he housed in the front office per House Bill 589 SUPPLIES

14 FILLING OUT THE FORMS

15 Old forms that allow pre-registration of 16- and 17-year olds should not be used. If you have any of these old forms, please destroy them. WHAT IF I HAVE OLD FORMS?

22 SUPPLIES FOR THE REGISTRATION DRIVE

23 COLLECTION OF FORMS  Package in labeled envelope(s)  Write number of completed forms in each envelope on label provided  Give to your API on the last day of the drive. APIs will turn in forms at their meeting on September 10 and January 14

24  All completed forms must be kept in a locked, secure location.  If you get forms once the drive has ended, you have a couple of options:  You or the student can mail it to the Wake County Board of Elections  You or the student can drop it off at the Board of Elections  You can send it to me via courier and I will get it to the Board of Elections IMPORTANT REMINDERS
