2 Foreword The installation and start of operation of the T600 detector at Fermilab will require a number of actions that will include: Agreements and assumption of responsibilities Definition of workpackages including definition of resources Procurements Preparatory works Mechanical installation Cabling Tests and final acceptance tests Pre-commissioning phases Commissioning Operation The following document illustrates the sequence of operations for the installation and preparation for commissioning of the T600 detector. 3 Operations to be completed at FNAL before arrival of equipment Civil engineering (done) Doors installation Access road Building internal cranes Power installation (main switches) Ventilation installation safety power installation (at least for the cranes) light installation safety light installation Beneficial occupancy at ground level (this will set the T=0 for unloading the trucks and start operations). Beneficial occupancy at the pit level (this will set the T=0 for final installation). 5 Warm vessel bottom pre-assembly in the pit (upside-down) The structure basement will be assembled (bolted) on adequately aligned concrete supports in the pit, FACE DOWN. Possibly, the lateral walls will also be assembled in parallel at the ground level, if adequate space and facilities are available. Requirements to FNAL: Equipped space, cranes, crane drivers, concrete supports (aligned and surveyed), mains, ventilation, heating. 6 Warm vessel bottom pre-assembly in the pit (skin welding) The structure basement will be rotated (180°) and put in the final position. The external skin elements will be joined and tested for leak tightness. A final survey of the planarity of the supporting elements will be performed. Temporary grounding of the metallic structure is required. 7 Install all walls elements to form the lower part of the vessel The lateral walls will be pre-assembled, if adequate space is available, outside the pit. The external Stainless Steel skin will be welded and tested for leak tightness. The lateral walls will be put in place and bolted to the basement and to each other. The external Stainless Steel skins will be welded together and tested for Helium leak tightness. A final survey of the geometry will be performed. 8 Prepare for insulation installation on the lower part of the vessel Rods to support the insulation panels are installed. Close all lateral penetations, if any. Perform a final leak test on the lower part of the warm structure. Requirements to FNAL: Mains, ventilation, heating, temporary grounding, fumes detectors, helium, helium leak detectors. 9 Install thermal insulation on the lower part Thermal insulation panels will put in place for the basement and the lateral walls. High stiffness elements will be installed in correspondence with the 20 supports. Sensors will be installed inside the insulation panels. 10 Install cold feet for cold vessels support The supports for the two colds vessels will be delivered to FNAL. They allow correct positioning of the vessels before, during and after the cool down and filling. The cold feet will be installed, adjusted in position and surveyed. 11 Thermal shields assembly on the lower part Thermal shields will be transported to FNAL in large sub-components (22 pieces). Bottom and lateral parts will be assembled with the input lines and tested to 10 bars (operating pressure is 2.3 bars). 13 Installation of the cold vessels After unloading from the truck and placement in the top building, the cold vessels will be inspected both externally and internally for general integrity of the TPCs. The feet under the cold vessels will be then installed prior to install the vessels in the final location inside the pit. 14 Installation of Chimneys and final internal operations Readout cables will be taken from the inside of the cold vessels though the connecting “chimneys”. A survey of the TPCs will be performed. The ceramic resistances that connect the race tracks will be put in place. All other vacuum tight connections crossing the thermal insulation will be installed, including the pipe for LAr filling and recirculation. The manholes will be then definitively sealed. 15 Internal vacuum tests Vacuum pumps, valves, and vacuum gauges will be transported to FNAL and installed on the chimneys. All ports of the Argon circuit (“chimneys”, etc.) will be temporarily closed and vacuum pumps will be installed on each container and on the container walls. All installed connections will be tested for helium leak tightness (10 -8 mbar x liters / s). Requirements to FNAL: mains, ventilation, heating, technicians for chimneys and flanges installation and sealing, helium, helium leak detectors, safety and support for tests. 16 Thermal shield top assembly and test The vacuum equipment will be removed and the top part of the thermal shield will be installed together with the output lines and all the circuit be tested again at 10 bars. 20 Step 13 – Installation of electrical feedthroghs The other parts of the warm vessel roof will be put in position, one by one, bolted on the lower structure and the external skin will be welded to the lower structure skin and to the previous part. 21 Installation of flexible joints Rubber (neoprene) joints will be attached between the external stainless steel skin and the “chimneys” to ensure tightness of the insulation volume and allow displacement of the chimneys during cool down. The tightness of the rubber joints and of the entire warm structure will be tested. Requirements to FNAL: mains, ventilation, heating, helium, leak detector, safety for tests. 23 Installation of external joints Two main activities will be carried on, in parallel, from this point on. Installation of the external joints on the chimneys (crosses); installation of argon and nitrogen external piping. 28 Step 13 – Installation of electrical feedthroghs The external cryogenic equipment will be procured, installed and tested. This will include storage dewars, liquid transfer lines and gas exhaust lines both for LN2 and LAr. A pre- filter of adequate capacity will also be installed for the T600 filling. All safety and control equipment will also be installed together with the compressed air distribution. Requirements: mains, ventilation, heating, safety for tests, compressed air. Helium leak tests will be done on all external connections of the argon circuit, the purification filters will be opened as a last part of the leak tests. 41 Final operations before start cold commissioning Hardware for DAQ and for remote apparatus control (cryogenics, slow controls, etc.) will be procured and installed inside an appropriate space (control room). 44 Cosmic rays tagger installation The design of the warm vessel allows installation of the cosmic rays tagger bottom and lateral parts at any time after the warm vessel completion. The top part can be installed only when the cryogenics plant and readout electronics installation is complete. The baseline design of the cosmic rays tagger has to be completed. The procurement of the basic elements of the cosmic rays tagger will be procured (scintillators, optical fibers, SiPMs, on board electronics, mechanical components) and assembled. The CRT panels will be installed and cabled. R/O electronics has to be designed, procured, installed and connected, together with the required power supplies.
