Agenda 2 Category Review State of the Market Recycling 101

Recycling Terminology Aka “MRF” Where haulers take recyclables for both manual and automated sorting Material Recovery Facility Material Recovery Facility that accepts a “dirty” stream of both recyclables and waste Sortation is completed at the facility rather than by the patron “Dirty MRF” Recycling Rate How much we divert from the landfill stream to a recycling stream Diversion Rate Recyclables or landfill waste that is divided up according to how haulers collect waste from facilities Waste Stream 3 TerminologyRecycling Process

Recycling Streams 4 TerminologyRecycling Process Single Stream Multi-Stream Dirty Stream

Flow of Recyclables 5 TerminologyRecycling Process Janitors dispose of waste into dumpsters Janitors move waste from container into mobile receptacles Patrons dispose of waste Haulers pick up waste from facilities in trucks Trucks take waste to Material Recovery Facility where it is sorted Material Recovery Facilities sell clean streams of recyclables

Waste in the U.S. 7 StatisticsMacro Trends Municipal Solid Waste Generation, Recycling, and Disposal in the United States: Facts and Figures for 2012

Discarded Vs. Recycled Materials 8 StatisticsMacro Trends Municipal Solid Waste Generation, Recycling, and Disposal in the United States: Facts and Figures for 2012

Recycling and Composting Rates 9 StatisticsMacro Trends Recycling rates have continued to increase Composting is a trend beginning to rise Municipal Solid Waste Generation, Recycling, and Disposal in the United States: Facts and Figures for 2012

Market Trends 10 StatisticsMacro Trends Zero Waste Goals Hauling Costs Legislation China’s Green Fence Organic Waste

Zero Waste Goals 11 StatisticsMacro Trends Companies and Colleges committed to Zero Waste Zero Waste goals are set to divert all waste away from landfills. These goals maximize recycling, minimize waste, reduce consumption and ensure that products are made to be reused, repaired or recycled back into nature or the marketplace.

Hauling Costs The longer the haulers’ trips, the more expensive waste services become. Many facilities save money by having recycling programs, as the tipping fees charged by recycling haulers tend to be less expensive. MRFs are localized, resulting in shorter trips for recycling haulers. Landfills have consolidated locations in the U.S., creating longer commutes for waste haulers. 12 StatisticsMacro Trends

Legislation 13 StatisticsMacro Trends AB341: Businesses that produce greater than 4 cubic yards of waste must recycle. Enacted 2012 Austin Universal Ordinance: Requires all commercial properties to recycle by 2017, organics by 2018 NYC Commercial Organics Law: Requires large businesses to recycle organic waste. Enacted July 2015 Organics Regulation

China’s Green Fence 14 StatisticsMacro Trends China has implemented legislation to reject American waste streams that are too contaminated 50% to 75% of America’s recycled content is sold to China each year *onearth.org Material Recovery Facilities have refined processes in order to meet these standards

Organic Waste 15 StatisticsMacro Trends 40% of the food in the U.S. goes uneaten In the U.S., in-store retail food loss totals about 43B lbs. annually 4-10% of food purchased by restaurants becomes kitchen loss Diners leave 17% of meals uneaten, with 55% not taken home American families throw out ~25% of the food and beverages they buy Of all of this food loss, only 3% is composted

Organic Waste 16 StatisticsMacro Trends Food Waste is produced and collected in commercial facilities Organic Waste haulers pick up waste Waste is processed at either an Anaerobic Digester Or at a Compost Facility
