1 Larkspur-Corte Madera School District District Mission/Vision Larkspur-Corte Madera School District is a dynamic learning community. We are inspired to think critically, collaborate, encourage creativity, and communicate effectively in supportive and inclusive environments. Every individual is empowered to become a productive citizen through relevant, rigorous, and engaging curriculum, active partnerships, and authentic interdisciplinary learning experiences.

2 VAPA Visual and Performing Arts in LCMSD Vision Our district vision is to provide an extraordinary education for every child and a positive, supportive environment where each student can thrive. The Larkspur-Corte Madera School District has created an arts vision that aligns with our district vision: All Larkspur students K-8 will have daily access to comprehensive, sequential, culturally-dynamic, standards based instruction in the four arts disciplines: Dance Music, Theater, and Visual Arts.

6 Overview of the Program All Fifth grade students will have a music class weekly. Students will choose to participate in either band or chorus The Cove School Taught by Ms. Derby Students will attend 45 minute band or chorus classes Neil Cummins Elementary Chorus taught by Ms. Wolf, band taught by Ms. Klaubert Students will attend 45 minute band or chorus classes

7 Goals of the Program Develop tone quality Proper breathing techniques Reading a fingering chart Proper articulation Use a variety of meters Identify and define basic musical terms Instrument care Practice techniques Performance

8 Instrumental Music Expectations Students are asked to participate following these requirements: ●Bring instrument, book and accessories to every music class at school ●Practice 15-30 minutes every day at home. Practice is essential for success! ●Students will need to be prepared and on time to lessons and rehearsals

11 Instruments Offered Percussion Bell Set and Snare Drum Students will also work with other percussion instruments during rehearsals.

13 Instrument Rental Information Why Rent Instrument? ●Better quality instruments when renting ●Students still deciding best instrument choice, renting gives more flexibility ●Rental stores often offer insurance in case of accidents

15 Rental Information If you already own an instrument Please be sure to have the instrument examined by a professional repair/rental shop Please be sure to have all the needed equipment and supplies (reeds, extra strings, cork grease, ect.)

16 Rental Information Costs ● Rental fees, reeds, cleaning materials ● The school will offer scholarship instruments based on need. Other tips ●Call the store before arriving to check instrument availability and try to have your child with you! ●Place a name tag inside and outside the instrument case ●Wait to put the instrument together until after the first lesson. ●Your child will need an instrument by his/her first lesson

17 Timeline and Registration Forms Students at both schools will see all of the instrument choices performed by Mr. Derby’s advanced band students on Friday, May 22. Students will receive a sign-up form at the instrument demonstration. They will need to make a first, second and third preference. All students will get one of their choices. Picking an instrument is a very personal choice and we encourage families to discuss the choices at home to find the instrument that will be most meaningful for your child. We will do our best to accommodate student preference, but cannot guarantee it due to the need to balance class sizes. Sign-up forms must be returned by Friday, June 5.
