3. Setting up a Printer Lesson 1 – Setting Up a Printer ♦ Introduction In Linux, printers are set up on a local computer and on a network as well. Linux has advanced printing system known as Common Unix Printing System. Setting up a Printer ♦ The Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) is an entirely new and modern printing system. ♦ It has web-based administration that helps in setting up CUPS easily. ♦ CUPS will support network, parallel and serial printers. ♦ A windows system can print to a printer shared by a Linux system through CUPS without using any other software. ♦ CUPS printing system is relatively easy to configure than LPD and LPRng. Setting up a Printer Topic 3 - Adding a IPP Printer ♦ An IPP printer is a printer connected to different Linux system on the same network that runs CUPS or a printer configured on different operating system for using IPP. ♦ By default, the Printer Configuration Tool will browse the network for any shared IPP printers. ♦ A new networked IPP printer can be added by clicking the New button in the main Printer Configuration Tool window.
