Our Digital Storytelling Journey Created by Dagmar K. and Janet S. for Teaching with Technology Winter 2016

Focus of our Workshop To introduce digital stories as a new type of assessment To explain why we chose to use it as an assignment To outline the steps we followed to create our digital story To describe some of the challenges we faced in creating our digital story To offer helpful advice on how to create your own digital story

Why digital story telling in our English classes? Faculty : Replacement of a traditional form of written assignments Adds creative elements Promotes use of technology Enhances memory through narration Builds personal connections to content

Why? Students: “Designing and communicating information requires students to deepen their understanding of content while increasing visual, sound, oral language, creativity, and thinking skills. Making meaning out of an experience deepens the communication for both the author and the viewers.” From: http://creativeeducator.tech4learning.com/v04/articles/The_Art_of_Digital_S torytellinghttp://creativeeducator.tech4learning.com/v04/articles/The_Art_of_Digital_S torytelling Digital stories allow students to create their own media, which is an important skill for students in a digital web era. 5 Learning Challenge in our English classes The learning challenges our students in English courses are facing:  Demonstrating academic language skills  Creativity in academic writing  Lack of confidence when interacting with others  Fear of presenting in front of audiences  Boredom of repeated traditional forms of assignments, such as writing Essays and Research papers (retention rates)  Failure to understand links between academic writing (in the form of essays) and “real world” writing

Digital stories potential themes EAP300/500/150:  The students’ final product can reflect their personal journeys/ heritage- ancestors/culture/ neighbourhoods; summarizing a story; reflecting on the main character’s challenges, obstacles, diaries; Other courses:  Business : creating an e-pitch, Social Studies : becoming a global citizen/solving poverty;  https://edudigitalstorytelling.wordpress.com/digstoryedu/ https://edudigitalstorytelling.wordpress.com/digstoryedu/  Any ideas about possible themes used in your courses?

Learning Goal The idea we would like to implement in our classes is creating a Digital Story Telling project as one of the assignments, which is a combination of : 1. Creative writing following English composition skills- composing a transcript of their "story" focusing on content, organization, structure, mechanics/grammar, pronunciation, using editing revising skills along with proper use of references. Their final projects should be “coherent, concise, clear, relevant and thoughtful.” https://edudigitalstorytelling.wordpress.com/writing/ 2. Gaining more experience in creating Powerpoint including a) adding images (pictures) b) adding audio (background music), and c) converting it to moviemaker. 3. Becoming confident in presenting - recording their own voices in Seneca recording studio/ or using the headsets.

Seneca’s Academic Plan – Core Literacies 1. Intercultural and global perspective – through experiential learning 2. Digital Literacy: Word, Power point, Audio, Recording, Moviemaker 3. Oral and written literacy 4. Critical thinking and problem solving 5. Creative thinking 6. Ethical reasoning, personal and social responsibility

Our Movie! Our Digital Storytelling project titled Things We Love about Toronto was originally created for Toronto MILE course, which we are developing and will be used as a sample to demonstrate the requirements of the final product and guide our students through the steps how to proceed. 4 mins

Assessment Rubric for assessment found in Creating Educational Videos: https://educationvideos.wordpress.com/basic-session-agenda/ (Checklist – link to rubric)

Our Steps to create a digital story: 1. Consulted with Sandbox team (Jennifer P.) and booked the recording studio. 2. Researched topic (city of Toronto) 3. Wrote a couple of drafts of the transcript for our story in Word. 4. Converted it into power point slides and add text/type transcript (Word document Draft 1) 5. Selected images from https://www.flickr.com/ that were free to use, and copied them into our power point slides.https://www.flickr.com/ 6. Revised and Edited script and images before recording. 7. Selected background music using free YouTube audio. (Technical difficulty-not saved in correct format- make sure it is Mp3).

Steps… 8. Practiced reading the script and decided who was going to record which slides. 9. Recorded audio at the recording studio (not too time consuming). 10. Added Credits to Moviemaker (copy and paste from Word doc). 11. Embedded background music ensuring that the music continues to the end of the slides including credits. 12. Save Everything!!! Each step in the process should be saved in case of errors you do not have to redo! 13. Final Editing within Moviemaker with assistance of Jennifer (removing silent areas/spaces).

Challenges / Solutions 1. Time: 20 hours of editing approx. for 20 slides (4 min movie) We would suggest only 5 slides max for students 2. Use of Technology Simple formatting/cutting/ pasting/images/framing Learning how to use mic/volume/new software/music (be sure to leave a silent pauses of 3-5 sec between the slides) Technical difficulties with mic., laptop software problems, audio volume issues Saving all in the correct format Missing credit mistake in final editing and adding background music Feeling frustrated? Call SANDBOX team (or JENNIFER) for help!

Usability & Accessibility (AODA) Transcript is a part of our movie (captioning option in videos) Audio provided Credits stated
