Manufacturing Management Prayash Neupane

Manufacturing Management MM refers to all aspects of the product manufacturing process. From assembly design to packaging & sending out the finished product, employee work shifts, quality control and accounting all fall under MM. Key elements in MM includes development of product, ethics in business, Quality, accountability and future forecasting.

Phases of Product Development Process Planning Concept Development System-Level design Design Detail Testing and Refinement Production Ramp-up

Product Development Process Customer need identification Feasibiliy Study Product Design Product Development and Engineering for sales Process design and development Product evaluation and improvemen t by purchasing Product use and support by operation Suppliers

Quality Function Development Approach to getting the voice of the customer into the design specification of a product is Quality Function Development. Uses interfunctional teams from marketing, design, engineering, and manufacturing. Has been credited by Toyota motor co. for reducing costs on its cars by more than 60% by significantly shorting design times.

Process of QFD Define consumer requirements. Weight them in base of importance. Compare and rate company’s product with the products of competitors. ( This process helps the company to determine product characteristics that are important to consumer and to evaluate its product in relation to others.)

Home Of Quality Customer requirement information forms the basis for a matrix called the house of quality. By building a house of quality matrix, the cross functional QFD team can use customer feedback to make engineering, marketing and design decisions. The most important benefit of the HOQ is that it helps the team focus on building a product that satisfies customers.

Steps In HOQ Developing customer requirement for the product. Rank them in order of importance. Customer are then asked to compare the company’s product to the competition. A set of technical characteristics of the product is developed. Use these data to evaluate the strengths and weakness of the product in terms of technical characteristics.

Modular Function Development MFD is a systematic method and procedure for company supportive product modularization. It is based on well known Quality function development. MFD enables QFD to ensure the same task by optimal modular product or may be its parts composed only from the selected modules is if required.

Stages in MFD Quality function development Systematic generation and selection of modular concept Module indication matrix ( MIM provides the mechanism for investigating opportunities of integrating multiple function into single modules.)
