The Book of Revelation Chapters 8-11 April 6, 2016

Vision of Jesus and Seven letters to seven churches 1-34-7 Throne of God & Scroll with seven seals 8-11 Seven trumpets 12-16 Christ, the Dragon & the Seven Bowls 17-19 The Harlot on Seven Hills & the Bride 20 The King reigns 21-22 New Heaven & New Earth Each ends with a promise of 2 nd Coming Christ wipes away every tear (7:17) Christ will reign forever & ever (11:15) Fall of the nations “It is done” (16:17) Rider on the White Horse (19:16) Judge & Lake of Fire I am coming quickly (22:20)

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer 1 When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2 Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. 3 And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne, Revelation 8:1-3

4 and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel. 5 Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and there were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake. Revelation 8:4-5

Revelation 8:1-5 Beginning in Revelation 8 we see a series of divine plagues of Godly, biblical proportionsBeginning in Revelation 8 we see a series of divine plagues of Godly, biblical proportions They parallel the plagues of Egypt but are worldwideThey parallel the plagues of Egypt but are worldwide They are warnings offering the ungodly a chance to repentThey are warnings offering the ungodly a chance to repent They are judgements that go beyond natural explanationThey are judgements that go beyond natural explanation With the breaking of the seventh seal a new phase of God’s judgement begins as the seven angels prepare to blow their seven trumpetsWith the breaking of the seventh seal a new phase of God’s judgement begins as the seven angels prepare to blow their seven trumpets The seventh seal is a dramatic pause, the calm before the stormThe seventh seal is a dramatic pause, the calm before the storm This total silence is possibly the first and only time heaven has been totally silent – remember the heavenly hosts constantly praise GodThis total silence is possibly the first and only time heaven has been totally silent – remember the heavenly hosts constantly praise God What comes now is contained on the scroll – as Jesus breaks the 7 th seal, the trumpet judgements and the bowl judgements are inside the inner scroll – previously held by the final sealWhat comes now is contained on the scroll – as Jesus breaks the 7 th seal, the trumpet judgements and the bowl judgements are inside the inner scroll – previously held by the final seal

Revelation 8:1-5 The seven angels mentioned are special – they are parallel to the four angels holding back the four windsThe seven angels mentioned are special – they are parallel to the four angels holding back the four winds These are the seven angels who stand before God – though not called Archangels in Revelation, these appear to be the seven noted archangels: Uriel, Raphael, Raguel, Michael, Saraqael, Gabriel, and Remiel (identified in Jewish and Christian tradition)These are the seven angels who stand before God – though not called Archangels in Revelation, these appear to be the seven noted archangels: Uriel, Raphael, Raguel, Michael, Saraqael, Gabriel, and Remiel (identified in Jewish and Christian tradition) Only Michael and Gabriel are named by name in the BibleOnly Michael and Gabriel are named by name in the Bible The seven trumpets are NOT shopharsThe seven trumpets are NOT shophars They are 1 st century trumpets – normally connected to warfareThey are 1 st century trumpets – normally connected to warfare These were signaling devises, not playing musicThese were signaling devises, not playing music In addition to the seven angels we also see an eighth – one who receives a golden censerIn addition to the seven angels we also see an eighth – one who receives a golden censer

Revelation 8:1-5 Translation/clarification of the of the verse on incense – it best translates meaning “incense equal the prayers of the saints on earth”Translation/clarification of the of the verse on incense – it best translates meaning “incense equal the prayers of the saints on earth” Importance of the incense is its effectiveness – in church the effectiveness comes from the amount of smoke producedImportance of the incense is its effectiveness – in church the effectiveness comes from the amount of smoke produced Much incense magnifies the amount of all the prayers and it is shown to be VERY effective:Much incense magnifies the amount of all the prayers and it is shown to be VERY effective: “rose before God from the hand of the angel” for the incense to rise around and go up before the enormity of God it has to be incredibly effective and productive“rose before God from the hand of the angel” for the incense to rise around and go up before the enormity of God it has to be incredibly effective and productive Where as God has previously told the Martyrs “Wait a little longer,” now the justice prayed for is about to be delivered with the sounding of the trumpets – the prayers have ascended before God and now He transforms them and hurls them back to earth – we have moved fully to judgementWhere as God has previously told the Martyrs “Wait a little longer,” now the justice prayed for is about to be delivered with the sounding of the trumpets – the prayers have ascended before God and now He transforms them and hurls them back to earth – we have moved fully to judgement

Revelation 8:1-5 The censor being hurled to earth as a blazing object anticipates the blowing of the first three trumpetsThe censor being hurled to earth as a blazing object anticipates the blowing of the first three trumpets John will see blazing objects strike the earth three different times, each time with cataclysmic resultsJohn will see blazing objects strike the earth three different times, each time with cataclysmic results The four phenomena “peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake” occurred when God revealed Himself to Moses on Mount SinaiThe four phenomena “peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake” occurred when God revealed Himself to Moses on Mount Sinai Now they occur as God reveals Himself, His divine judgement, upon mankind and it will happen two more times in revelation – they here prelude before the first trumpet, then they will occur after the seventh judgement and then after the pouring out of the seventh bowl of God’s wrathNow they occur as God reveals Himself, His divine judgement, upon mankind and it will happen two more times in revelation – they here prelude before the first trumpet, then they will occur after the seventh judgement and then after the pouring out of the seventh bowl of God’s wrath These are the awesome manifestation of the presence of God and His acting in judgementThese are the awesome manifestation of the presence of God and His acting in judgement

The Seven Trumpets 6 Now the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them. 7 The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth. And a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up. 8 The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. Revelation 8:6-8

Trumpet Plagues in Revelation and Exodus Trumpet Plagues on Egypt 1 st : Hail with fire Rev, 8:7 7 th : Hail with fire Ex. 9:22-26 3 rd : Rivers turn to blood Rev. 8:8-11 1 st : Nile turns to blood Ex. 7:19-25 4 th : Darkness Rev. 8:12 9 th : Darkness Ex. 10:21-23 5 th : Demonic Locusts Rev. 9:1-12 8 th : Natural Locusts Ex. 10:12-20 6 th : Widespread Death Rev. 9:13-21 10 th : Widespread Death Ex. 12:29-30 The Trumpet Judgements have three purposes:The Trumpet Judgements have three purposes: To Hinder the Antichrist’s empireTo Hinder the Antichrist’s empire To warn unbelievers of increased judgement to comeTo warn unbelievers of increased judgement to come To rally the saints to gather in prayerTo rally the saints to gather in prayer The last 2 trumpet judgements are intensified and result in the death of 1/3 of the human raceThe last 2 trumpet judgements are intensified and result in the death of 1/3 of the human race

Revelation 8:6-8 Verse 8:6 is the transition from the seven seals to period of final judgementVerse 8:6 is the transition from the seven seals to period of final judgement One interpretive view is that the seven seals represent the period of human history up to the final time of judgement that is begun with the seven trumpetsOne interpretive view is that the seven seals represent the period of human history up to the final time of judgement that is begun with the seven trumpets With the sounding of the first trumpet the earth moves into a phase of divine judgement that it cannot surviveWith the sounding of the first trumpet the earth moves into a phase of divine judgement that it cannot survive The first trumpet result is similar to God’s prediction in Joel 2:30, “I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke”The first trumpet result is similar to God’s prediction in Joel 2:30, “I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke” It is like but MUCH worse than the seven plagues on EgyptIt is like but MUCH worse than the seven plagues on Egypt This is worldwide ecological disaster – 1/3 of the earth burned, 1/3 of the trees burned up, all the green grass burned upThis is worldwide ecological disaster – 1/3 of the earth burned, 1/3 of the trees burned up, all the green grass burned up This plague is devastating but not yet fatalThis plague is devastating but not yet fatal

Revelation 8:6-8 The plague on nature is meant as a divine warning of worse disasters to come – just like the ancient plagues on EgyptThe plague on nature is meant as a divine warning of worse disasters to come – just like the ancient plagues on Egypt The second trumpet is a repeated pattern from verse 5 when the golden censer was hurled down to earthThe second trumpet is a repeated pattern from verse 5 when the golden censer was hurled down to earth John can only give his interpretive language of the event – something “like a huge mountain, burning with fire” we don’t know the exact mechanism of God’s wrath but it is obviously significantJohn can only give his interpretive language of the event – something “like a huge mountain, burning with fire” we don’t know the exact mechanism of God’s wrath but it is obviously significant As God works His judgement it is important to see that He who created all sea life has the authority and perfect justice to destroy a third of it in His willAs God works His judgement it is important to see that He who created all sea life has the authority and perfect justice to destroy a third of it in His will

9 A third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed. 10 The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water, because it had been made bitter. Revelation 8:9-11

The mention of the human toll, “a third of the ships were destroyed” demonstrates the death rates that will accompany thisThe mention of the human toll, “a third of the ships were destroyed” demonstrates the death rates that will accompany this The fact that God is still only destroying a fraction – 1/3 – shows that even as He is exercising a severe judgement, it is not yet completely fatalThe fact that God is still only destroying a fraction – 1/3 – shows that even as He is exercising a severe judgement, it is not yet completely fatal God is still giving severe warnings and the opportunity for repentanceGod is still giving severe warnings and the opportunity for repentance The third trumpet appears to be a meteor named WormwoodThe third trumpet appears to be a meteor named Wormwood Wormwood is an extra bitter plant but one that normally is not poisonousWormwood is an extra bitter plant but one that normally is not poisonous God has already struck the oceans, now He destroys 1/3 of the fresh waters of the earthGod has already struck the oceans, now He destroys 1/3 of the fresh waters of the earth This is a parallel with Exodus and the plague which turned the Nile into bloodThis is a parallel with Exodus and the plague which turned the Nile into blood The effect of these are enormous – if 1/3 of the oceans are destroyed, 1/3 of the trees and all the green grass and now 1/3 of the fresh water – imagine the impact this has on food sources for humanity and the destruction of animalsThe effect of these are enormous – if 1/3 of the oceans are destroyed, 1/3 of the trees and all the green grass and now 1/3 of the fresh water – imagine the impact this has on food sources for humanity and the destruction of animals

12 The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of their light might be darkened, and a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night. 13 Then I looked, and I heard an eagle crying with a loud voice as it flew directly overhead, “Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth, at the blasts of the other trumpets that the three angels are about to blow!” Revelation 8:12-13

With the fourth trumpet it is important to remember that God promised Noah in Genesis (Gen. 8:22) that “as long as the earth endures … day and night will never cease.”With the fourth trumpet it is important to remember that God promised Noah in Genesis (Gen. 8:22) that “as long as the earth endures … day and night will never cease.” This event, even after the destruction already done, is the beginning of the end of the worldThis event, even after the destruction already done, is the beginning of the end of the world With 1/3 of the light from the sky blotted out, life on earth now will quickly become impossibleWith 1/3 of the light from the sky blotted out, life on earth now will quickly become impossible There is, like much of the Revelation, no time sequence given here so we don’t know how long these events take to unfold but the close interrelatedness of the first three seem to be close togetherThere is, like much of the Revelation, no time sequence given here so we don’t know how long these events take to unfold but the close interrelatedness of the first three seem to be close together One thing to note: God created everything and gave humanity all the good things of creation – here, in the end, He is taking it awayOne thing to note: God created everything and gave humanity all the good things of creation – here, in the end, He is taking it away

Revelation 8:12-13 Even as this happens an eagle sounds the warning of much worse to come – the eagle is possibly an angel and he pronounces one “Woe” for each of the impending three trumpetsEven as this happens an eagle sounds the warning of much worse to come – the eagle is possibly an angel and he pronounces one “Woe” for each of the impending three trumpets Notice that the “woes” are directed at “those who dwell on the earth” – the earth dwellers who live for this world.Notice that the “woes” are directed at “those who dwell on the earth” – the earth dwellers who live for this world. There is a pattern in the judgements and the seals – the first four of each have affected the earth and the last three depict heavenly and spiritual scenesThere is a pattern in the judgements and the seals – the first four of each have affected the earth and the last three depict heavenly and spiritual scenes Results of the first four trumpets:Results of the first four trumpets: 1/3 of the earth and vegetation burned1/3 of the earth and vegetation burned 1/3 of the sea no longer habitable for sea life1/3 of the sea no longer habitable for sea life 1/3 of man’s shipping destroyed1/3 of man’s shipping destroyed 1/3 of the world’s fresh water poisoned1/3 of the world’s fresh water poisoned The sun, moon and stars are darkened, day becomes only 16 hoursThe sun, moon and stars are darkened, day becomes only 16 hours

1 And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. 2 He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. 3 Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth. Revelation 9:1-3

Verses 9:1-12 describe the Fifth Trumpet – the First WoeVerses 9:1-12 describe the Fifth Trumpet – the First Woe There is much debate about the identity of the angel in verse 1.There is much debate about the identity of the angel in verse 1. He is referred to as “fallen from heaven to earth” and the Greek translation is accurate in thisHe is referred to as “fallen from heaven to earth” and the Greek translation is accurate in this If this is the case then this is a fallen angel – possibly SatanIf this is the case then this is a fallen angel – possibly Satan BUT there is no other point in Revelation where God uses a fallen angel to do His workBUT there is no other point in Revelation where God uses a fallen angel to do His work AND why would God entrust the devil with the keys to his own prison?AND why would God entrust the devil with the keys to his own prison? Likely this is an angel (not demon or the devil) who returns in verse 20:1 to open the bottomless pit to bind SatanLikely this is an angel (not demon or the devil) who returns in verse 20:1 to open the bottomless pit to bind Satan BUT could be a parallel between two angels – one “fallen” to open the pit and one good to close and bind the devilBUT could be a parallel between two angels – one “fallen” to open the pit and one good to close and bind the devil Not definitive for one view or the otherNot definitive for one view or the other

Revelation 9:1-3 Jesus is in complete control of the Abyss – in verse 3:7, “What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open.”Jesus is in complete control of the Abyss – in verse 3:7, “What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open.” His representative – the start angel – acts under His commandHis representative – the start angel – acts under His command The “bottomless pit” is clearly Hell and is the same as the demons “Legion” referred to in Luke 8:30-31, “they begged Him not to command them to depart into the abyss.”The “bottomless pit” is clearly Hell and is the same as the demons “Legion” referred to in Luke 8:30-31, “they begged Him not to command them to depart into the abyss.” This is where Satan will be bound during Jesus’ thousand year reign in the futureThis is where Satan will be bound during Jesus’ thousand year reign in the future “Smoke like the smoke of a great furnace” parallels numerous OT references“Smoke like the smoke of a great furnace” parallels numerous OT references Used to depict the wrath of God (2 Sam. 22:9, Ps. 18:8, Job 41:20)Used to depict the wrath of God (2 Sam. 22:9, Ps. 18:8, Job 41:20) Designates the day of Yahweh from Joel 2:30Designates the day of Yahweh from Joel 2:30 The locusts are empowered to especially dangerous to humans but though under the command of the “angel of the bottomless pit” (verse 9:11) they show God’s complete control in His limiting their actions and attacksThe locusts are empowered to especially dangerous to humans but though under the command of the “angel of the bottomless pit” (verse 9:11) they show God’s complete control in His limiting their actions and attacks

Revelation 9:1-3 Joel 2:10 describes locusts so dense that “the sun and moon are darkened, and the stars no longer shine.”Joel 2:10 describes locusts so dense that “the sun and moon are darkened, and the stars no longer shine.” This prophesy also refers to the cloud of winged creatures coming in judgement of Israel. This prophesy also refers to the cloud of winged creatures coming in judgement of Israel. The locust also reenact the eighth Egyptian plagueThe locust also reenact the eighth Egyptian plague

4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree, but only those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 They were allowed to torment them for five months, but not to kill them, and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings someone. 6 And in those days people will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, but death will flee from them. Revelation 9:4-6

These locusts are restrained from any damage to their normal diet – they now can only torment the individuals who “do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.”These locusts are restrained from any damage to their normal diet – they now can only torment the individuals who “do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.” Remember that the judgement against vegetation has already taken placeRemember that the judgement against vegetation has already taken place These next judgements are against humanity so vegetation will be sparedThese next judgements are against humanity so vegetation will be spared Remember verses 7:3-4 where the saints are “sealed” on their foreheads with the seal of God – they are safeRemember verses 7:3-4 where the saints are “sealed” on their foreheads with the seal of God – they are safe These judgements are retribution for those who have rejected God and have refused to turn from their evil and the world of sinThese judgements are retribution for those who have rejected God and have refused to turn from their evil and the world of sin God also restrains these creatures and forbids them to kill – they can only tormentGod also restrains these creatures and forbids them to kill – they can only torment This torment is linked to the next which will see 1/3 of these same people killedThis torment is linked to the next which will see 1/3 of these same people killed

7 In appearance the locusts were like horses prepared for battle: on their heads were what looked like crowns of gold; their faces were like human faces, 8 their hair like women's hair, and their teeth like lions' teeth; 9 they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the noise of their wings was like the noise of many chariots with horses rushing into battle. 10 They have tails and stings like scorpions, and their power to hurt people for five months is in their tails. 11 They have as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon. Revelation 9:7-11

The locusts are one of the most bizarre creatures described – a combination of locust, scorpion and warriorThe locusts are one of the most bizarre creatures described – a combination of locust, scorpion and warrior In addition to bringing physical torment they also instill terror by their appearanceIn addition to bringing physical torment they also instill terror by their appearance “What looked like crowns of gold” is indicative of the victory they have over their human targets“What looked like crowns of gold” is indicative of the victory they have over their human targets Their human faces seem to indicate their cunning and intelligence which are far out of proportion with insectsTheir human faces seem to indicate their cunning and intelligence which are far out of proportion with insects The five-month period of torment corresponds to the five-month life span of locustsThe five-month period of torment corresponds to the five-month life span of locusts The “angel of the bottomless pit” – named here “Abaddon,” which translates to “destruction” is SatanThe “angel of the bottomless pit” – named here “Abaddon,” which translates to “destruction” is Satan He controls the actions of the demonic beasts and shows his evil by attacking those who have followed and been obedient to himHe controls the actions of the demonic beasts and shows his evil by attacking those who have followed and been obedient to him

12 The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still to come. 13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released to kill a third of mankind. Revelation 9:12-15

The voice John hears is Jesus – it is a singular voice, not multiple voices and it gives a command. Also it is not identified as an angel as in previous passages. The voice John hears is Jesus – it is a singular voice, not multiple voices and it gives a command. Also it is not identified as an angel as in previous passages. The four angels are “bound” – an important distinction – these are fallen angels or else there is no need to bind themThe four angels are “bound” – an important distinction – these are fallen angels or else there is no need to bind them The Euphrates River is the eastern border of the land promised to Abraham as noted in Gen. 15:18The Euphrates River is the eastern border of the land promised to Abraham as noted in Gen. 15:18 It is possible – in the reading – that “the hour and day and month and year” could dictate a time period instead of the date of their releaseIt is possible – in the reading – that “the hour and day and month and year” could dictate a time period instead of the date of their release If this is the case it is believed that this represents 13 months – a time period during which they will kill 1/3 of the populationIf this is the case it is believed that this represents 13 months – a time period during which they will kill 1/3 of the population The exactness of this release time / date further illustrates God’s total control and the preciseness and accuracy of His controlThe exactness of this release time / date further illustrates God’s total control and the preciseness and accuracy of His control

16 The number of mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand; I heard their number. 17 And this is how I saw the horses in my vision and those who rode them: they wore breastplates the color of fire and of sapphire and of sulfur, and the heads of the horses were like lions' heads, and fire and smoke and sulfur came out of their mouths. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths. Revelation 9:16-18

This is 200,000,000 demons in this plague. This is 200,000,000 demons in this plague. To picture the impact/power of the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur – think of a volcanic eruption, packed down into the size of a horse and multiplied by 200 millionTo picture the impact/power of the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur – think of a volcanic eruption, packed down into the size of a horse and multiplied by 200 million The three are separate plagues that are combined into the one dramatic and incredibly deadly effect – and they are not alone because the horses have another weapon they useThe three are separate plagues that are combined into the one dramatic and incredibly deadly effect – and they are not alone because the horses have another weapon they use John notes the colors of the horse demon’s armor – this is significant armor that apparently keeps them from being killedJohn notes the colors of the horse demon’s armor – this is significant armor that apparently keeps them from being killed The Tricolor scheme is importantly symbolic:The Tricolor scheme is importantly symbolic: Each color represents one of the plagues that comes from the demonsEach color represents one of the plagues that comes from the demons Red – FireRed – Fire Blue – SmokeBlue – Smoke Yellow – SulfurYellow – Sulfur

Revelation 9:16-18 The breastplates and their colors symbolize the deadly nature of their plagues and their strengthThe breastplates and their colors symbolize the deadly nature of their plagues and their strength The heads of the horse demons being those of lions is another indicator of their deadliness – lions are well known (and more so in ancient times) for their lethality to humansThe heads of the horse demons being those of lions is another indicator of their deadliness – lions are well known (and more so in ancient times) for their lethality to humans Lions eat humans and their threat here is also symbolic of the humans who are being killed having been consumed by their sinfulness to the point of refusing God’s graceLions eat humans and their threat here is also symbolic of the humans who are being killed having been consumed by their sinfulness to the point of refusing God’s grace Again, 1/3 of the remaining population is killedAgain, 1/3 of the remaining population is killed

19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound. 20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons wand idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, 21 nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts. Revelation 9:19-21

As incredibly powerful and awful as the plagues of the horse demon’s mouths are, they are also equipped with their serpent tailsAs incredibly powerful and awful as the plagues of the horse demon’s mouths are, they are also equipped with their serpent tails It is important to notice that Jesus had specifically compared demons to “snakes and scorpions” – “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy” Luke 10:19It is important to notice that Jesus had specifically compared demons to “snakes and scorpions” – “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy” Luke 10:19 By His own description it is fitting that the twin demon hoards of Revelation 9 are both scorpion-like and snake-likeBy His own description it is fitting that the twin demon hoards of Revelation 9 are both scorpion-like and snake-like A very important point to notice is that even here deep in the Great Tribulation there is still a chance to repent though the humans determinedly refuse to do soA very important point to notice is that even here deep in the Great Tribulation there is still a chance to repent though the humans determinedly refuse to do so This is a stark illustration of the sinfulness of humanity and the sickness of this devotion to sinThis is a stark illustration of the sinfulness of humanity and the sickness of this devotion to sin

The Angel and the Little Scroll 1 Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow over his head, and his face was like the sun, and ahis legs like pillars of fire. 2 He had a little scroll open in his hand. And he set his right foot on the sea, and his left foot on the land, 3 and called out with a loud voice, like a lion roaring. When he called out, the seven thunders sounded. Revelation 10:1-3

Just as we saw an “interlude” between the 6 th and 7 th seals, here we are seeing the “interlude” between the 6 th and 7 th trumpetsJust as we saw an “interlude” between the 6 th and 7 th seals, here we are seeing the “interlude” between the 6 th and 7 th trumpets This is the first of the two-part interlude and it takes all of chapter 10This is the first of the two-part interlude and it takes all of chapter 10 One effect of this is to heighten our desire to learn what happens when the final trumpet is blownOne effect of this is to heighten our desire to learn what happens when the final trumpet is blown This entire two-part interlude focuses on God’s prophetic wordThis entire two-part interlude focuses on God’s prophetic word The scene shifts to John on earth seeing an angel come down from heaven – up to this point (in chapters 4-9) John has reported what he saw from a heavenly vantage pointThe scene shifts to John on earth seeing an angel come down from heaven – up to this point (in chapters 4-9) John has reported what he saw from a heavenly vantage point In this interlude John is more than an observer and we learn more about John as a prophetIn this interlude John is more than an observer and we learn more about John as a prophet The image of the mighty angel is one that has been much debated by scholars but does have strong Biblical ties to ScriptureThe image of the mighty angel is one that has been much debated by scholars but does have strong Biblical ties to Scripture

Revelation 10:1-3 This is an angel – NOT Jesus – John does not worship this being as he would Jesus and Jesus will not come down to the earth until the endThis is an angel – NOT Jesus – John does not worship this being as he would Jesus and Jesus will not come down to the earth until the end The imagery of the angel points to other parts of scripture:The imagery of the angel points to other parts of scripture: “robed in a cloud” – suggests the cloud of God’s glorious presence (Exod. 16:10; Luke 9:34)“robed in a cloud” – suggests the cloud of God’s glorious presence (Exod. 16:10; Luke 9:34) “a rainbow above his head” – reminds us of the rainbow around the heavenly throne (Rev. 4:3) and the majesty of God“a rainbow above his head” – reminds us of the rainbow around the heavenly throne (Rev. 4:3) and the majesty of God “face was like the sun” – like the face of Jesus in the first chapter, reflects the glory of God in his servants and is shining because he has been in God’s direct presence“face was like the sun” – like the face of Jesus in the first chapter, reflects the glory of God in his servants and is shining because he has been in God’s direct presence “legs were like fiery pillars” – like the pillar of fire that led the Israelites out of Egypt (Exod. 13:21)“legs were like fiery pillars” – like the pillar of fire that led the Israelites out of Egypt (Exod. 13:21) “right foot on the sea and left foot on the land” – shows the colossal size of the angel and the complete authority of God who sent him“right foot on the sea and left foot on the land” – shows the colossal size of the angel and the complete authority of God who sent him

Revelation 10:1-3 There is a possibility that this angel is Gabriel – he stands in the presence of God, he is similar to the description of Gabriel in Daniel 12:7, if this is the case John is the 4 th and final human to whom he brings a message – Daniel, Zechariah, Mary and, finally, JohnThere is a possibility that this angel is Gabriel – he stands in the presence of God, he is similar to the description of Gabriel in Daniel 12:7, if this is the case John is the 4 th and final human to whom he brings a message – Daniel, Zechariah, Mary and, finally, John This is the only “loud voice like the roaring of a lion” we see in RevelationThis is the only “loud voice like the roaring of a lion” we see in Revelation The response to this angels loud voice is “the seven thunders”The response to this angels loud voice is “the seven thunders” A completely mysterious personalityA completely mysterious personality John acts as though we know what he means, he refers to them as “the seven thunders” but we don’t know who they areJohn acts as though we know what he means, he refers to them as “the seven thunders” but we don’t know who they are They remain a mystery to us but they appear to be awesome by John’s observationThey remain a mystery to us but they appear to be awesome by John’s observation

4 And when the seven thunders had sounded, I was about to write, but I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and do not write it down.” 5 And the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven 6 and swore by him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and what is in it, the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it, that there would be no more delay, 7 but that in the days of the trumpet call to be sounded by the seventh angel, the mystery of God would be fulfilled, just as he announced to his servants the prophets. Revelation 10:4-7

Earlier in the Revelation thunder accompanies lightning and earthquake as a prelude to God’s end-time judgement on an un-godly world.Earlier in the Revelation thunder accompanies lightning and earthquake as a prelude to God’s end-time judgement on an un-godly world. It is possible then that the thunders speak in greater detail about the end of the worldIt is possible then that the thunders speak in greater detail about the end of the world Whatever the message, it is different and an unnamed voice from heaven tells John “do not write it down”Whatever the message, it is different and an unnamed voice from heaven tells John “do not write it down” This is a 180 degree departure from John’s earlier instruction about what he is being given in this revelation from JesusThis is a 180 degree departure from John’s earlier instruction about what he is being given in this revelation from Jesus The message is sealed up, similar to the prophesy given to Daniel, and this reminds us that the Bible does not contain or show all the events of the future or revealed to certain individualsThe message is sealed up, similar to the prophesy given to Daniel, and this reminds us that the Bible does not contain or show all the events of the future or revealed to certain individuals BUT we are given plenty of teaching and signs to prepare our lives for the end times – the Bible is sufficient for salvation, not exhaustiveBUT we are given plenty of teaching and signs to prepare our lives for the end times – the Bible is sufficient for salvation, not exhaustive

Revelation 10:4-7 The fact that the angel stood “on the sea and on the land” impressed John and he emphasizes this by mentioning it three timesThe fact that the angel stood “on the sea and on the land” impressed John and he emphasizes this by mentioning it three times The angel swears a solemn oath – the only one to do this in the Bible other than the angel of the Lord in Genesis 22:15-16The angel swears a solemn oath – the only one to do this in the Bible other than the angel of the Lord in Genesis 22:15-16 We know that this is the absolute truth because he vows by God HimselfWe know that this is the absolute truth because he vows by God Himself His oath is very significant:His oath is very significant: “There will be no more delay” – man has repeatedly asked “how long?” the angel answers the question finally and definitively“There will be no more delay” – man has repeatedly asked “how long?” the angel answers the question finally and definitively “but that in the days of the trumpet call to be sounded by the seventh angel” – there will be no delay once the events of the six trumpets have occurred, the seventh trumpet will end everything“but that in the days of the trumpet call to be sounded by the seventh angel” – there will be no delay once the events of the six trumpets have occurred, the seventh trumpet will end everything “the mystery of God would be fulfilled just as He announced to His servants the prophets” – the divine truth in the Bible, God’s final defeat of evil and realization of His ultimate purpose for humanity“the mystery of God would be fulfilled just as He announced to His servants the prophets” – the divine truth in the Bible, God’s final defeat of evil and realization of His ultimate purpose for humanity

Revelation 10:4-7 “the mystery of God would be fulfilled just as He announced to His servants the prophets” – (cont.) Amos noted in 3:7 of his book, “Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets”“the mystery of God would be fulfilled just as He announced to His servants the prophets” – (cont.) Amos noted in 3:7 of his book, “Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets”

8 Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again, saying, “Go, take the scroll that is open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.” 9 So I went to the angel and told him to give me the little scroll. And he said to me, “Take and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.” 10 And I took the little scroll from the hand of the angel and ate it. It was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it my stomach was made bitter. 11 And I was told, “You must again prophesy about many peoples and nations and languages and kings.” Revelation 10:8-11

The “little scroll” is NOT the same scroll as the one Jesus has in heaven that contains God’s judgement planThe “little scroll” is NOT the same scroll as the one Jesus has in heaven that contains God’s judgement plan John actually created a new word for this scroll that translates closest to “little scroll”John actually created a new word for this scroll that translates closest to “little scroll” The scroll in heaven could only be opened by Jesus and He is only worthy to do so and He still holds the scrollThe scroll in heaven could only be opened by Jesus and He is only worthy to do so and He still holds the scroll This scroll is open in the hand of the angel and John is worthy to take this scroll from the angelThis scroll is open in the hand of the angel and John is worthy to take this scroll from the angel This little scroll symbolizes God’s message to the 1 st Century churches that John is to give to them – not the end times planThis little scroll symbolizes God’s message to the 1 st Century churches that John is to give to them – not the end times plan The contents are especially for God’s servants and His churchThe contents are especially for God’s servants and His church Parallels Ezekiel 3:3 where the prophet was given a scroll to eat with prophesy of suffering coming for IsraelParallels Ezekiel 3:3 where the prophet was given a scroll to eat with prophesy of suffering coming for Israel

Revelation 10:8-11 John’s eating the scroll is very much a symbol of taking God’s Word into ourselves and digesting it – meditating on it and understanding itJohn’s eating the scroll is very much a symbol of taking God’s Word into ourselves and digesting it – meditating on it and understanding it The scroll is sweet as honey in John’s mouth which speaks to the pleasant experience we have when we meditate on God’s wordThe scroll is sweet as honey in John’s mouth which speaks to the pleasant experience we have when we meditate on God’s word The scroll turning John’s stomach sour can also be translated as giving John heartburnThe scroll turning John’s stomach sour can also be translated as giving John heartburn This is the unpleasantness of having to give the message of future pain and suffering to God’s peopleThis is the unpleasantness of having to give the message of future pain and suffering to God’s people After John has eaten the scroll he is told, literally “they said to me” (this is the voice from heaven and the mighty angel) that he must still prophesy what lies ahead for the ungodly of the worldAfter John has eaten the scroll he is told, literally “they said to me” (this is the voice from heaven and the mighty angel) that he must still prophesy what lies ahead for the ungodly of the world

The Two Witnesses 1 Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, 2 but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months. 3 And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.” Revelation 11:1-3

This is during the last 3 ½ years of the Great TribulationThis is during the last 3 ½ years of the Great Tribulation During this time the Holy City is controlled by Gentiles under the direct supervision of the antichrist.During this time the Holy City is controlled by Gentiles under the direct supervision of the antichrist. “Gentiles” in Revelation usually translates to “nations” – those who oppose God“Gentiles” in Revelation usually translates to “nations” – those who oppose God It is during this time he will promote himself as god.It is during this time he will promote himself as god. God sends His two witnesses to prophesy for 1,260 days (just less than 3 ½ years)God sends His two witnesses to prophesy for 1,260 days (just less than 3 ½ years) These are Jews who will minister to IsraelThese are Jews who will minister to Israel These prophets, like John was tasked in chapter 10, must prophesy to evil people and nationsThese prophets, like John was tasked in chapter 10, must prophesy to evil people and nations John was the 1 st century prophet, this is now the end times prophets on the sceneJohn was the 1 st century prophet, this is now the end times prophets on the scene

Revelation 11:1-3 There is an interpretational issue with “Holy City” –There is an interpretational issue with “Holy City” – Some see it as the literal Jerusalem as it exists when Jesus returns with a re-built TempleSome see it as the literal Jerusalem as it exists when Jesus returns with a re-built Temple Another prevalent view is that, give that John knew of Jerusalem’s destruction in 70 AD, this refers to the people of God who are on the earth and not yet fully glorified – what is remaining of the “church”Another prevalent view is that, give that John knew of Jerusalem’s destruction in 70 AD, this refers to the people of God who are on the earth and not yet fully glorified – what is remaining of the “church” This also looks to the fact that a new “Holy City” mentioned in chapter 21, “the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.”This also looks to the fact that a new “Holy City” mentioned in chapter 21, “the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.” This Holy City is seen as the people of God fully glorified and perfectedThis Holy City is seen as the people of God fully glorified and perfected The measuring that John is called to do is not explained but one view is that this measuring is of the people of God (per the above interpretation) and which parallels Ezekiel and Zechariah where measuring symbolizes divine protectionThe measuring that John is called to do is not explained but one view is that this measuring is of the people of God (per the above interpretation) and which parallels Ezekiel and Zechariah where measuring symbolizes divine protection

4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. 5 And if anyone would harm them, fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes. If anyone would harm them, this is how he is doomed to be killed. 6 They have the power to shut the sky, that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague, as often as they desire. Revelation 11:4-6

Scripture establishes at several places that TWO witnesses are required to affirm truthScripture establishes at several places that TWO witnesses are required to affirm truth The time of prophesy for these witnesses is almost the entire time that the antichrist and the nations will trample the Holy CityThe time of prophesy for these witnesses is almost the entire time that the antichrist and the nations will trample the Holy City These are Old Testament prophets who will proclaim God’s Word without sinThese are Old Testament prophets who will proclaim God’s Word without sin There are many ideas as to who these prophets are (Enoch & Elijah; Moses and Elijah; or Peter and Paul)There are many ideas as to who these prophets are (Enoch & Elijah; Moses and Elijah; or Peter and Paul) “Clothed in sackcloth” reflects humble witnesses, sorrowful and mourning for the sins in the world surrounding them“Clothed in sackcloth” reflects humble witnesses, sorrowful and mourning for the sins in the world surrounding them “Lord of the earth” points to Zechariah 4:1-14 to interpret the symbols: here a single lampstand and two olive trees “are anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth.” In this case these symbolize Israel – the people of God“Lord of the earth” points to Zechariah 4:1-14 to interpret the symbols: here a single lampstand and two olive trees “are anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth.” In this case these symbolize Israel – the people of God

Revelation 11:4-6 There is literal and symbolic messages in the two witnessesThere is literal and symbolic messages in the two witnesses The two physical witnesses of the end time and their mission with the literal powers given to them by God play their role in combatting the evil of the antichrist until just before the endThe two physical witnesses of the end time and their mission with the literal powers given to them by God play their role in combatting the evil of the antichrist until just before the end Symbolically this is important to see as the Christian church in all times – the church must proclaim the word of God in the face of a hostile world and the enemies of God and their agendas will be torn down (“burned up” or “eaten down”) by the power of God’s Word and the power of the Holy SpiritSymbolically this is important to see as the Christian church in all times – the church must proclaim the word of God in the face of a hostile world and the enemies of God and their agendas will be torn down (“burned up” or “eaten down”) by the power of God’s Word and the power of the Holy Spirit The powers given to the messengers is also indicative of the authority given to Christ’s followers in this world to combat the evil we are faced withThe powers given to the messengers is also indicative of the authority given to Christ’s followers in this world to combat the evil we are faced with

7 And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, 7 And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, 8 and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that symbolically is called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was crucified. 9 For three and a half days some from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb, 10 and those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and exchange presents, because these two prophets had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth. Revelation 11:7-10

What happens to the two witnesses is an example of why the small scroll was bitter in John’s stomach – when they have finished their assigned duty they will be killedWhat happens to the two witnesses is an example of why the small scroll was bitter in John’s stomach – when they have finished their assigned duty they will be killed God always ensures His servants get to finish their task He has for themGod always ensures His servants get to finish their task He has for them They will be killed by the antichrist’s servants who “make a war against them”They will be killed by the antichrist’s servants who “make a war against them” The fact that they are left unburied speaks of the great hatred the world and its servants have for God’s wordThe fact that they are left unburied speaks of the great hatred the world and its servants have for God’s word In the 1 st century to leave your enemy unburied was a sign of utter contempt and this is magnified by the celebration that goes on for their deathsIn the 1 st century to leave your enemy unburied was a sign of utter contempt and this is magnified by the celebration that goes on for their deaths Where this happens is greatly debated – on one hand it makes sense that this would be Jerusalem given the statement that this is where “their Lord was crucified”Where this happens is greatly debated – on one hand it makes sense that this would be Jerusalem given the statement that this is where “their Lord was crucified”

Revelation 11:7-10 The name “the great city” occurs eight times in Revelation and is normally used in reference to BabylonThe name “the great city” occurs eight times in Revelation and is normally used in reference to Babylon “the great city that rules over the kings of the earth”“the great city that rules over the kings of the earth” It is possibly Jerusalem – likened to Sodom by Isaiah in the Old TestamentIt is possibly Jerusalem – likened to Sodom by Isaiah in the Old Testament Called Egypt because of the world having taken it over in all ways and the oppression and slavery of her people during these timesCalled Egypt because of the world having taken it over in all ways and the oppression and slavery of her people during these times This could be the city where the antichrist establishes his rule and we are not explicitly led to know the city for sureThis could be the city where the antichrist establishes his rule and we are not explicitly led to know the city for sure The witnesses will lie dead for 3 ½ days, giving the world a brief period that it believes is victoryThe witnesses will lie dead for 3 ½ days, giving the world a brief period that it believes is victory Note: They witness for 3 ½ years, lie dead 3 ½ days. 3 ½ is half of 7 (the number for completeness) so this is a sign that things are not completeNote: They witness for 3 ½ years, lie dead 3 ½ days. 3 ½ is half of 7 (the number for completeness) so this is a sign that things are not complete God’s judgement on evil will not be complete until He judges allGod’s judgement on evil will not be complete until He judges all The Great Tribulation is only a prelude to His final judgementThe Great Tribulation is only a prelude to His final judgement

11 But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here!” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies watched them. 13 And at that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven. 14 The second woe has passed; behold, the third woe is soon to come. Revelation 11:11-14

Remember that John is seeing in Heavenly time – not linear time – the vision of verses 11-12 appears to be expanded and shown again in Revelation 20:4- 6Remember that John is seeing in Heavenly time – not linear time – the vision of verses 11-12 appears to be expanded and shown again in Revelation 20:4- 6 The events here also will tie and link in – not chronologically – with events in chapter 16The events here also will tie and link in – not chronologically – with events in chapter 16 This is the only Biblical text to speak of a special resurrection and ascension occurring before Jesus’ return. This is the only Biblical text to speak of a special resurrection and ascension occurring before Jesus’ return. 57 Revelation 11:11-14 In the brief time left and finally after the powerful events of the resurrection and ascension of the witnesses the population is finally realizing their errorIn the brief time left and finally after the powerful events of the resurrection and ascension of the witnesses the population is finally realizing their error That the remaining population “gave glory to the God of heaven” does not mean that they are convertedThat the remaining population “gave glory to the God of heaven” does not mean that they are converted They are making a terrified confession like the response to the earthquake in chapter 6 verses 15-17They are making a terrified confession like the response to the earthquake in chapter 6 verses 15-17 BUT this does mark an initial fulfillment of the time when “every knee shall bow and every tongue confess Jesus’ name” from Philippians 2:10-11BUT this does mark an initial fulfillment of the time when “every knee shall bow and every tongue confess Jesus’ name” from Philippians 2:10-11 This is end of the interlude between the sixth and seventh trumpets that began in chapter 10This is end of the interlude between the sixth and seventh trumpets that began in chapter 10 The announcement of the end of the second woe does two things:The announcement of the end of the second woe does two things: It moves our attention from the interlude back to the events of the endIt moves our attention from the interlude back to the events of the end It prepares us for what is even worse – what is coming, the end of the world and the time of its judgementIt prepares us for what is even worse – what is coming, the end of the world and the time of its judgement

The Seventh Trumpet 15 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” 16 And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign. Revelation 11:15-17

18 The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.” 19 Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail. Revelation 11:18-19

The final lines of the elder’s praise go with a key theme: God’s final judgementThe final lines of the elder’s praise go with a key theme: God’s final judgement The time has come for the judging of the dead as will be shown in chapter 20The time has come for the judging of the dead as will be shown in chapter 20 God will reward the righteous – both small and greatGod will reward the righteous – both small and great God WILL destroy those who “destroy the earth” – the Greek used for “destroy” translates better as “to corrupt morally” – God will destroy the depravedGod WILL destroy those who “destroy the earth” – the Greek used for “destroy” translates better as “to corrupt morally” – God will destroy the depraved John’s vision of God began with the throne room – it is now seen as God’s temple in heavenJohn’s vision of God began with the throne room – it is now seen as God’s temple in heaven The Ark on earth symbolized the gracious covenant between God and manThe Ark on earth symbolized the gracious covenant between God and man The Ark has been lost but John is seeing what no human had seen in centuriesThe Ark has been lost but John is seeing what no human had seen in centuries
