Analyze the events and actions that led the colonies to rebel against Great Britain. 4. How did colonists react to the treatment they received from the British government? 5. How did the events of the Revolutionary time period influence the formation of a national identity?

4 FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR France’s Empire French Areas – Quebec, St. Lawrence River Valley, Great Lakes, Mississippi River Interested in fur trading not colonies Better relationship with the Indians English colonies want to expand and farm ( soil depletion ) Indians resist the English expansion and ally with the French

5 E NGLAND V. F RANCE a. Old Rivalry – Multiple wars fought between French and English in past centuries b. 1754 – conflict ignites again as French building forts near the Virginia border c. Virginia Gov’t sends George Washington to fight against the French d. The French easily defeat Washington and his militia e. Victory will eventually be won by the English f. Treaty of Paris, 1763 – France loses almost all lands in North America (Louisiana)

6 A LBANY P LAN 1754 Benjamin Franklin proposes that each of 11 colonies send delegates to form a centralized government Rejected because colonies did not view unity as beneficial Ben Franklin was ahead of his time read text

7 P ROBLEMS AFTER THE W AR i. Indians in the Ohio Valley revolt against the British forts ii. Conflict become costly for Britain iii. Proclamation of 1763 – States that no colonist could cross the Appalachian Mtns. iv. Colonist ignore the law and continue to provoke the Indians

8 T ENSIONS B UILD British are heavily in debt b/c of the war and keeping a British Army in America Trading restrictions are passed to levy duties (collect taxes ), smugglers avoid taxes Sugar Act – affected merchants and traders; protests began against “taxation without representation”, James Otis

9 STIRRINGS OF REBELLION Stamp Act Parliament Passes the Stamp Act – Places a direct tax on the colonist required stamp on all legal documents, newspapers, licenses, cards taxed the rich and the poor Quartering Act, 1765 – placed military in the homes of the colonist

10 T OWNSHEND A CTS New tax placed on imports such as tea, glass, paper, and paint Colonists again reacted with protests British reacted by sending more troops

11 C OMPARE AND C ONTRAST Name some direct taxes placed on colonists through Parliament’s various Acts Name some indirect taxes placed on colonists through Parliament’s Acts Which hurt colonists more?

12 NOW… W RITE A L ETTER TO K ING G EORGE 1. Discuss treatment of the colonists to this point 2. Include things like: Navigation Acts, Proclamation of 1763, Stamp Act, Townshend Acts, etc. 3. Be prepared to present your letter!
