4 Absence status epilepticus in a 50 year-old man with confusion De novo absence status epilepticus is a rare form of non-convulsive status epilepticus. It is encountered in older adults without prior epilepsy. Etiologies include benzodiazepine withdrawal, metabolic derangement and alcoholism 1. Treatment with anticonvulsants used in the idiopathic generalized epilepsies is effective 2. In the above patient levetiracetam resolved his symptoms and normalized the EEG.
