6 www.cirtl.net Speaker slide: What is a Teaching Philosophy Statement? A teaching philosophy statement is a 1-1 ½ page (single-spaced) document articulating your beliefs about teaching and learning with evidence of how you enact those beliefs in your teaching. When someone reads your teaching philosophy statement, they should have a sense of what you want your students to gain from taking your classes and should be able to visualize you in the classroom and interacting with your students.

7 www.cirtl.net Speaker slide: Tips *Don’t rehash your CV; focus less on what courses you have taught and more on how it is you go about teaching *Even though it is called a Teaching “Philosophy” Statement it should not be theoretical

8 www.cirtl.net Speaker slide: Writing Style 1-1½ pages; single-spaced Narrative style in first person; present tense Clear and precise language; support buzzwords and technical terms with evidence of clear understanding Tone about teaching and students is positive Well written without writing errors; ask multiple readers to review and provide feedback

12 www.cirtl.net Speaker slide: Objectives Identify 3-4 objectives/themes/goals for your teaching and/or student learning Objectives should be clearly written and easily identifiable (headings, boldface, or italics) Each objective should be unique Objectives should be achievable and relevant to teaching responsibilities Objectives can range from short-term to long- term Objectives should be relevant and specific for teaching in particular field
