Catalyst 1. Write 4800 in scientific notation. 2. What is product of 3.4 x 10 3 and 1.0 x 10 -1 ? 3. Simplify (8.8 x 10 3 ) 2.

Today’s Objectives SWBAT add and subtract using scientific notation. SWBAT read and decipher word problems to decide which operation (+, -, *, or ÷) is to be used. SWBAT apply scientific notation to real-word problems.
3
To add or subtract scientific notation 1. Convert one of the numbers so that both numbers have the same exponent. Always convert to the smallest exponent of ten. 2. Add or subtract the numbers multiplied by powers of 10 3. keep the exponent of 10 the same. 4. If necessary, move the decimal point and change the exponent of 10 so that the answer is in scientific notation.
4
Simplify the expression, 1.31 × 10 5 + 3.27 × 10 3. 1. Write 1.31 × 10 5 in terms of 10 3. 1.31 × 10 5 = 131 × 10 3 2. Add the numbers by adding the numbers multiplied by the power of ten and keeping the power of 10 the same. 131 × 10 3 + 3.27 × 10 3 = (131 + 3.27) × 10 3 = 134.27 × 10 3 3. Write the answer in scientific notation. 134.27 × 10 3 = 1.3427 × 10 5
