The Argonne Neutrino Group Collaboration with Chicago and Fermilab (From the ANL perspective) Maury Goodman 2 February 2009

Outline  Neutrino Physics (1 slide)  ANL-HEP Group Activities  NO A work, an overview of extrusions  A few “collaborativeness” comments

What next for physics? A Groucho Marx Question *, “Two of the three mixing angles have been measured. What should we do next?” * At the end of the show, Losing contestants would get questions with obvious answers, so that everyone won some money.

Projects/Activities  Soudan 2 (ANL)  MINOS (ANL, FNAL)  Double Chooz (ANL, Chicago)  NO A (ANL, FNAL)  COGENT (ANL, Chicago)  LB-DUSEL (ANL, FNAL, Chicago)  The Neutrino Oscillation Industry www.neutrinooscillation.org  Long-Baseline newsletter Monthly 100 line email to 1700 (!) Opt-in (maury.goodman@anl.gov)maury.goodman@anl.gov  Non-proliferation  Committees, conferences, workshops, …

Pre MINOS  NuMI beam conceived at ANL in 1988  The current physics program well described in 1991 workshop  Early beam design supported by ANL LDRD funds

MINOS  World’s Best measurement of  m 2 32  Search for non-zero  13 (W&C this month)  Interesting Cosmic Ray physics  Oscillations with Far Detector

The Site ν ν ν ν ν ν ν ν 1051 m 280 m Double Chooz Reactor Experiment

Double Chooz work Chicago & ANL had previously collaborated on the Braidwood idea, led by Chicago Chicago working on outer veto, originally designed at ANL ANL working on calibration & software, pioneered at Chicago

NO A Long-Baseline detector plastic filled with scintillator An admirer 32-cell extrusions. The planes alternate horizontal and vertical.

NO A size Kevin McFarland -2005 WIN Athens meeting 15.7m

How to extrude (Extratech)

CREEP tests To answer the question, “Will NOvA fall over?

Latest data point, invalid due to uncontrolled temperature CREEP tests To answer the question, “Will NOvA fall over?” 1 week

How to lift it

How to move extrusions

How to glue extrusions

How to measure extrusions

Some thoughts about FNAL/ANL collaboration on NO A  During NO A’s dark days, ANL hung in there and perservered, to the betterment of the NO A project now  During Fermilab’s dark days, Fermilab was still kind to ANL-HEP regarding paying for past NO A work  Outside HEP, ANL has engineering expertise which could be a valuable resource for NO A.
