CASE STUDY: STUDENT-CREATED CONTENT ENGLISH LITERATURE A LEVEL USING GENIUS My aims:  Promote independent learning and enquiry  Facilitate collaboration  Use class time for higher order skills and essay writing skills bit.ly/blakegenius

CASE STUDY: ENGLISH LITERATURE A LEVEL USING GENIUS Initial steps:  Created pages for each poem in the AQA anthology  Instead of homework, pupils had to prepare for every lesson by reading the poem and adding an annotation  I would read the annotations ahead of the lesson and prepare discussion points and activities accordingly bit.ly/blakegenius

Outcomes:  Initial, shallow learning took place outside the classroom  Enabled pupils to test out ideas with less pressure  Class time was better spent, focusing on more challenging activities and developing essay technique Issues: participation – not all pupils completed pre-lesson tasks

CASE STUDY: ENGLISH LITERATURE A LEVEL USING GENIUS Next steps:  Added teacher annotations to aid revision  Genius tools allow for complex and in-depth exploration of texts bit.ly/blakegenius

High-quality image embedding (can embed video too) Hyperlinks (good for comparison skills) Attractive formatting Outcomes:  Very positive response from students – good to have an “approved” set of notes from which to revise Issues: labour-intensive

OUTCOMES  Saved substantially on lesson time – more opportunity to promote deeper learning and develop essay writing skills  Enabled independent and collaborative learning during course and revision  Created a revision resource, tailored to in-class discussions, which pupils felt proud of and which could be returned to later in the year Next time:  Some pupils contributed more than others – better monitoring  Labour intensive – efficiency? More colleague involvement?
