9 THE SOMME THE SOMME RIVER IS IN FRANCE The Battle of the Somme started on July 1, 1916

10 THE SOMME It lasted until November 15, 1916. More Allied Soldiers died than German soldiers at the Battle of the Somme.

11 By the end of the Battle of the Somme, the British had suffered 420,000 casualties, the French lost 200,000 soldiers and the Germans lost almost 470,000 soldiers.

12 60,000 British soldiers died on the first day of the battle alone. This was the worst day of fighting in British history.
