2 The Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) For class today, you learned about and reflected on the meaning of the Cultural Revolution in China. You learned… –Following the failure of the Great Leap Forward, Mao began to believe that the Communist Party in China was being threatened by pro-capitalist bourgeois elements. –In response, he launched the Cultural Revolution Social movement designed to further cement communism in the country by removing capitalist elements from Chinese society. –In doing so it involved major changes to Chinese politics, economics, and social life.

3 The Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) Today we will build on your understanding thus far and reflect on the significance of the Cultural Revolution. We will visit the website: www.morningsun.orgwww.morningsun.org Go to the “living revolution” section. –Peruse “Listen to the Radio,” “Watch TV,” “Watch a Movie,” “The Little Red Book: Ask Chairman Mao for the Answers to your Problems,” and “Take an English Lesson” As you peruse complete the following: –Choose one source (song, film clip, the English lesson, etc.) –Briefly note: How is the source an example of the “cultural change” enforced by the Cultural Revolution? Why does the source suggest about what daily life was like during the Cultural Revolution? How does the source provide evidence for the Cultural Revolution as a form of totalitarian rule AND panoptic control?
