Class Notes 1: ATP Adenosine triphosphate

All living things need energy to live. Many cellular processes need energy (muscle use during exercise, cell division, cell growth, thinking, heart pumping, etc.) The energy molecule that living things use is called ATP.

Adenosine triphosphate ATP is a molecule made of 1.Adenine 2.Ribose (sugar) 3.Three Phosphates (PO 4 )

III. Storage of energy Chemical bonds hold the phosphates together. Energy is stored in these bonds

Energy is released when the bond between the 3 rd Phosphate & the 2 nd Phosphate is broken. ATP  ADP + P Adenosine P P P PP P + ENERGY

V. Formation of ATP Photosynthesis : Plants trap sunlight in the chlorophyll Plants use the sun’s energy to make glucose in the chloroplast Cellular Respiration Mitochondria in both plants and animals make the glucose into ATP

Summary What type of energy do cells use? How is this energy recycled?
