Scope of Discussion Concepts and ContextSoftware Platform: Walk-throughCurrent and Future Data Sets Examples of Tools, Visualisations, and Presentation Options

Context and Concepts

Risk Atlas is a National ‘Tool’ Fits into Global Change Grand Challenges planning Component (Tool) of an institutional architecture – Facilitate the science-policy link – Provide decision makers at national, provincial and local levels in South Africa with information to make timely and informed decisions that will improve the chances of adaptation. Broadly Supports Grand Challenge Outcomes

Centre of Excellence Applied Centre for Climate and Earth Systems Studies ( ACCESS ) Centre of Excellence Applied Centre for Climate and Earth Systems Studies ( ACCESS ) Global Change, Society, and Sustainability South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) Africa Earth Observation Network (AEON) programmes Inkaba ye Africa/ Ikhure Africa Africa Earth Observation Network (AEON) programmes Inkaba ye Africa/ Ikhure Africa Space Agency (Global Change Monitoring Network) South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas (R&V Atlas) SA Polar Research Entity Bureau on Global Change Science Global Change Performance and Investment Council Knowledge Brokering Support Unit Components of Architecture

Grand Challenge Outcomes

Vision: South African Risk & Vulnerability Atlas A ‘one-stop-shop’ for relevant global change findings – Especially tax-funded research – Outreach, communication and technology transfer platform for the decade-long Global Change ‘Grand Challenge’ Open and easy access – Via the internet – Hard-copy Atlas Based on an interactive electronic spatial database – Non-spatial studies will be accessible as well E.g. SA Health Information Network

Integration of data sources Integrated Development Plan Support – Case Studies – Theme pages (e.g. Health, Weather & Climate) Information will be available in the electronic spatial portal in the first phase New data sources will be added in second phase... for planning of a sustainable future

The Roles of Various Stakeholders DST is the ‘owner’ and initial sponsor CSIR is acting as its agent – Will be responsible for Project management, including subcontracting system design and implementation Content generation within some areas of expertise SAEON – Hosting, maintenance and archiving of the data system Specialists in universities, science councils, research institutions and government departments – Content generation and provision, including theme pages – Human Capacity development Steering Committee– guidance on information needs and priorities

Broad Concept Meta-Data Driven Catalogues – Rely on widely adopted standards – Describes data for discovery and future application Search and Discovery – Advanced Search Capabilities – GEO compliance Mapping, Charting, and Visualisation – Rely on web sources (WMS, WFS, KML, GeoRSS, …) – Allows map composition and persistence (Web Context) – Allows integration with portal search facilities – Visualisation and Informal Correlation Admin – Usage Statistics – Forced Registration Structured Data – Visualisation and Informal Correlation
