P.O.D. # basic advanced A student’s rectangular desk is 30” long and 18” wide. The teacher’s rectangular desk is 60” long and 36” wide. Are the desks similar? 30 60 18 36 = Student: Teacher: ? 30 36 = 18 60 1080 = 1080 ? Yes, the desks are similar. The two shapes above are similar. Determine the value of x. 6 24 9x9x = 6 x = 9 24 6x = 216 ÷6 ÷6 x = 36

Scale Drawings & Models
4
The measurements of a scale drawing or model are proportional to the measurements on the actual object. A scale drawing is an enlarged or reduced drawing of an object that is similar to the actual object
5
The scale is the ratio that compares the measurements of the drawing or model to the measurements of the real object. 1 inch 20 feet
6
Using A Scale Drawing I Do 1.5 cm = 3m The height of the Acrocanthosaur on a scale drawing is 4.5 cm. What is the actual height of the Acrocanthosaur? 1.5 cm 3 m 4.5 cm x = 1.5 x = 3 4.5 1.5x = 13.5÷1.5 x = 9 The actual height of the Acrocanthosaur is 9 meters.
7
Using A Scale Drawing We do Let’s try some examples on your guided notes now.

On a road map, the distance between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh is 7.5 inches. What is the actual distance between the cities if the map scale is 1.5 inches = 60 miles? 1.5 inches 60 miles 7.5 inches d miles = 1.5 d = 7.5 60 1.5d = 450÷1.5 d = 300

A photograph was enlarged and made into a poster. The poster is 20 inches by 30 inches. The scale factor is 5/1. Find the size of the photograph. 20 in 30 in Poster h w Photo poster photo 5151 = Scale factor: 5151 20 in h = 5151 30 in w = Height: Width:
10
5151 20 in h = Height: 5151 30 in w = Width: Whiteboard: 5 w = 30 in 1 5w = 30 in ÷5 w = 6 in 5 h = 20 in 1 5h = 20 in ÷5 h = 4 in

Each group needs: Calculations worksheets Pencils Calculators Graph paper Ruler
13
Step 1: Determine the scale of the drawing. Step 2: Calculate the scale measurements of the classroom. Step 3: Draw the outline of the classroom on your graph paper in pencil. Step 4: Write the scale of your drawing on your graph paper in pencil. Step 5: Calculate the scale measurements of the furniture. Step 6: Add the furniture to the your scale drawing in pencil.
