Progress and Goals

Goals of HerpNET Produce a distributed database among 36 museums in North America Use DiGIR protocol Georeference all N/S American localities in these collections and make them available through these distributed databases Establish a consistent methodology of georeferencing, including error calculation

Progress to Date  Publishing Website (www.herpnet.org)  Establishing Listserv to facilitate communication between institutions  Gathering all collection data from 36 institutions  Start of georeferencing at Year 1 institutions  Establishing prototype gazetteer of all unique localities* *Note: Due to some technical and staffing problems, along with delays in obtaining collection data, the projected new date for the finished gazetteer is January 31, 2004.

HerpNET Index page

Prototype Gazetteer

Progress of claiming localities: ~650,000 unique localities (using prototype gazetteer) 3.5 million specimen records total Of these, ~391,700 have been claimed Leaves 40% left to be claimed Of this total, 110,000 are MVZ localities, which have already been georeferenced

Regions Claimed

Georeferencing Rates on average  US localities=~10-20 per hour 1000 localities = 67 hours  Foreign localities = ~4 per hour 1000 localities = 250 hours

 Make production gazetteer public (projected date is Jan 31, 2004)  Institutions download rest of claimed data and georeference those localities  Set up servers at institutions soon? (e.g. core institutions with available computer personnel)  Make kernel of country data available (e.g. Belize, Honduras, El Salvador)  Set up filters at institutions with servers Next Steps:
