Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A Job, Flow and Batch Production Learning Objective: Describe different production techniques Learning Outcomes: Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A

Producing Goods Producing goods involves a series of activities: 1.Research what customers want and develop and design products to meet their needs. 2.Identify the resources needed in the production process to create a finished product or service. It is essential that this process is one that achieves added value. What is added value? 3.Obtain feedback from customers. The business may need to change the design of its products in some way, depending upon what customers say. Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A

Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A Starter activity There are three main production methods: Job production - is where a single item is produced from start to finish. Each item produced is likely to be unique. Batch production - is where a business makes a number of the same product (a batch) at the same time, i.e. a bakery might make 2000 tin loaves, followed by 1000 bread rolls. Process production – This method of production involves a series of automated processes which, when applied to a variety of raw materials, results in a large quantity of a finished product. For example BP uses this type of production to refine crude oil. Flow production - is a method of production which involves an assembly line, it is used to make large numbers of identical or standardized products. Goods are mass produced. Ford uses flow production to make cars.

Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A Production Methods The method of production for a mass produced car is different from that of a hand made glass bowl. Activity In order to meet our lesson objective and reach the C grade criteria we need to explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used. Look at the following examples and decide which production method should be used and why – move to the correct area of the classroom– be prepared to explain your answer!

Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A A business producing shoes, size 7

Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A A business producing shoes, size 7 Answer – Batch production

Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A A factory extension?

Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A A factory extension? Answer – Job production

Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A Cars?

Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A Televisions Answer – Flow production

Question What sort of production method do you think should be used to build houses?

Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A Activity - In order to reach our last lesson objective we need to analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production? All of you should be able to analyse an advantage or disadvantage for one type of production Most of you will be able to analyse an advantage or disadvantage for each type of production Some of you will be able to analyse more than one for each! AdvantageDisadvantage Job Batch Flow

Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A Review of Learning Individually – What have you learnt in this topic? Can you identify and describe the methods of production? Can you give associated advantages and disadvantages?

Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A Review of learning (ext) True or False – white board activity 1.Batch production is where a single item is produced from start to finish? (e) 2.Flow production is a method of production used to make large numbers of identical or standardized products? (e) Questions Explain what type of production would have been used to produce the channel tunnel? (c) Analyse why this is the most suitable method of production for this project (a)

Process production This method of production involves a series of automated processes which, when applied to a variety of raw materials, results in a large quantity of a finished product. For example BP use this methods to refine crude oil into petrol! Verbal Question – Can you think of any other businesses which may use process production Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A

Division of Labour and Specialisation One of the major advantages of flow production is that many processes which require a labour input can be broken down into small repetitive tasks. As a result of breaking down the production process into a number of small specialised tasks, the amount of time needed to train a worker to undertake the task may not be very long. While workers may become very efficient at doing their job, because of the number of times they complete the task each day, the job can become very boring and workers may become de-motivated. However, by allowing workers to specialise in production tasks, productivity can improve. Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A

Questions 1.Explain why businesses are sometimes limited as to the type of manufacturing processes they are able to use for the product(s) that they make 2.Consider how the different production processes allow businesses to keep control of their costs, and the problems that may occur if the business over- produces products? Identify job, batch and flow production - E Explain when job, batch and flow production are likely to be used - C Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of job, batch and flow production – A

Activity Why do you think a lot of businesses are replacing people with machines?

CAD Vs CAM CAD- Computer aided design CAM- Computer aided manufacturing What would be the advantages and disadvantages to using CAD and CAM in the workplace?

Review of learning Prepare an argument for and against replacing machines with people!

Case Study What type of production does a manufacturer of cushions use and why is that the most suitable for them?
