2 General Information June 2016 This Month: June is the month of the summer solstice, with its long days. Darkness falls later and the twilight of dawn comes earlier. In compensation, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn are well placed for viewing, and the grand sights of the summer Milky Way will reward those who persevere to the midnight hour. Sunset Range: 8:35 p.m. (June 1st) to 8:44 p.m. (June 30 th ). End of Astronomical Twilight (Full Darkness* – Sun 18° below horizon): 10:26 p.m. (June 1st) to 10:37 p.m. (June 30 th ). * Usually dark enough for observing about a half hour before this.

3 Moon Phases June 2016 Sat., June 4 th – New Moon (Observing at Cahas on June 3 rd and 4 th ) Sun., June 12 th – First Quarter Moon Mon., June 20 th – Full Moon Mon., June 29 th – Last Quarter Moon (Observing at Cahas on June 24 th and 25 th ) Roughly speaking: First Quarter Moon is highest at sunset and sets at midnight Full Moon rises at sunset and is in the sky all night Last (or “Third”) Quarter Moon rises at midnight and is highest at dawn New Moon sets at sunset and is absent from the sky all night

4 Celestial Events June 2016 Fri., 3 rd – Saturn at “opposition”; rises at sunset and sets at sunrise. Sat., 4 th – Jupiter at “east quadrature”; near the Meridian at sunset and sets about midnight. Sun., 12 th – The “Equation of Time” is 0. Sun cycles from Meridian and back again in 24 clock hours. Civil and solar time in synch. Tues., 14th – Earliest sunrise (5:59 a.m. EDT for Roanoke). Mon., 20th – Summer Solstice. Longest day of the year. Sun directly overhead at solar noon for places at latitude 23.44° North; farthest North the Sun can appear overhead (defines the Tropic of Cancer). Mon., 27th – Latest sunset (8:44 p.m. EDT for Roanoke). Thurs., 30th – Mars stationary in right ascension; resumes direct (eastward) motion against the background stars.
