 Electricity is a way of transferring energy from one form to another.  An electric current is a flow of tiny particles called electrons.

 Something to give the electrons energy and push them around the circuit. Eg.(A battery/powerpack)  A complete circuit!  Components that transfer the energy to another form. (Such as bulbs or buzzers)

 What is an electric current?  What three things does a circuit include?  What form(s) of energy does a light bulb transfer electricity to?

 We use an ammeter to measure the size of the electric current.  The units are amps (A)

 The voltage of a cell tells you how much energy the cell gives to the current.  It is measured using a voltmeter.  The units are volts (V).

Voltage can be increased by:  Using more cells in series  Using cells that supply a higher voltage. This will cause:  The current to increase  The amount of energy transferred by each amp of current to increase. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3sviTa8hZw

 A resistor reduces the size of the current in a circuit.  It makes it more difficult for the current to flow.  It transfers electrical energy to heat energy and most is lost to the surroundings.

 Match the following components to the explanation of what they do. Draw the symbols of the components. Ammeter Resistor Voltmeter Cell Measures how much energy the cell gives to the current Measures the size of the electric current Reduces the size of the current in a circuit. Something which gives the electrons energy and pushes them around the circuit.

 Voltmeters can also show how much energy is converted by each component.  The sum of the voltages across the components should equal the voltage across the cell.

 Copy the diagrams. Assuming all bulbs are the same, add what voltage the voltmeters would show across each bulb. 6. 0 V

A circuit needs wires for the voltage to flow through. A current is a flow of electrons. A voltmeter measures the energy converted by a component. A voltmeter is always connected in series. There can be a different voltage across each component in a circuit. Components always use up the same amount of energy. An ammeter measures the size of an electric current. True False
