Tania von Hospenthal – Clinical Services Manager British Association of Dermatologists

Background In 2011 a Working Party formed of phototherapy experts set out the minimum service standards for Phototherapy Departments. This was due to: Uniformed decision by commissioners in England to move UVB out into the community Variation to clinical governance and care pathways for patients Inconsistency in access to services by patients across the UK Service Standards are currently being revised due to interpretation by commissioners and private providers.

The revised service standards: Follow the patient pathway through care Written from the service user perspective Underpin NICE clinical guidelines and inform NICE quality standards (outcome indicators) Developed by a multidisciplinary Working Party Group (WPG) Incorporate requirements and recommendations set out nationally for services Take into account established managed clinical networks Service Standards Objectives

Developing Service Standards The core standards and requirements are set out under the following headings: STANDARD 1: Referral and Patient Assessment STANDARD 2: Patient Information and Consent STANDARD 3: Staff Training and Education STANDARD 4: Clinical Management & Monitoring STANDARD 5: Equipment and Facilities STANDARD 6: Clinical Governance and Audit STANDARD 7: Discharge Protocol STANDARD 8: Skin Cancer Surveillance

Developing Service Standards It is envisaged each standard will be weighted as follows: Type 1: failure to meet these standards would result in a significant threat to patient safety, rights or dignity and/or would breach the law; Type 2: standards that an accredited service would be expected to meet; Type 3: standards that an excellent service should meet

Accreditation of Services The BAD accreditation process supports services to evaluate their performance and improve their practice through: Phase 1: Self Review Phase 2: Peer review visit by an external team Phase 3: Accreditation Decision

The Final Stage The BAD is reviewing the feasibility of Managed Clinic Networks for the UK The vision is for a Dermatology MCN to incorporate all BAD service standards Stage by stage implementation one service standard at a time Administration support and costs would be provided by the BAD as a central resource
