TITLE- BUCK BOOST TRANSFORMER BY- NEERAJ S ABHYANKAR SEMINAR GUIDE- H.O.D.Mrs.M.H.DHEND

WHAT IS BUCK BOOST TRANSFORMER? Buck boost transformer is a type of transformer used to make small adjustment to the applied voltage to alternating current equipment. Buck means to decrease and Boost means to increase. We get several types of transformer …. All in one convenient package.

WHY ARE THEY USED? Electrical and electronic equipment is designed to operate on standard supply voltage. When the supply voltage is constantly too high or too low, (usually more than 55%), the equipment fails to operate at maximum efficiency. A buck and boost transformer is a simple and ECONOMICAL means of correcting this off-standard voltage.

Buck-boost transformers are power protection devices designed to protect electric equipment, such as motors and industrial air conditioners, from damage due to improper line voltage. Buck-boost transformers are ideal and economical solutions where the line voltage is consistently below or above the rated load voltage.

C ONSTRUCTION AND WORKING The principle of working of buck-boost transformer is same as that of a normal transformer. The main difference between buck-boost transformer and normal transformer is that it is having 4 windings. There are no restrictions on the type of load that can be operated from a buck- boost transformer.

SELECTION OF BUCK- BOOST TRASFORMER LINE VOLTAGE- It is the voltage that we want to Buck(Decrease) or Boost(Increase). This can be found by measuring the supply line voltage with a voltmeter. LOAD VOLTAGE- The voltage at which our experiment is designed to operate. This can be found out on the name plate of the load equipment.

LOAD KVA AND LOAD AMPS- We do not need to know both-one or other is sufficient for the selection purpose. This information can also be found on the name plate of the equipment that we want to operate. FREQUENCY- The supply line frequency must be the same as the frequency of the equipment to be operated-either 50 or 60 cycles. PHASE- The supply line must be the same as the equipment to be operated- either single or three phase.

ADVANTAGES - 1.Low cost 2.Compact size 3.Light weight 4.Highly efficient 5. More efficient than the equivalent distribution transformer. 6. Indoor or outdoor service.

LIMITATIONS - 1.Cannot be used to develop a three phase 4 winding wye circuit from a three phase three wire delta connections. Can not be used in open delta connections. Should not be used to correct for voltage drop on long circuit run where the load demand is fluctuating. Can not be used to create a 240/120V, single phase service from a 208/120V three phase supply.

A PPLICATIONS OF BUCK BOOST TRANSFORMER Buck boost transformer can be used as a Distribution transformer and Autotransformer. Buck boost transformers can be used in uninterrupted power supply(UPS) in computers. Boosting a 208v to 230v or 240v and vice versa for commercial and industrial air conditioning system.Boosting 120V to 240V or 277V for lightning system. Voltage correction for heating system and induction motor.
